Benko Dixieland Club

It is a very small cozy club behind the Kalvin Church.
To get there use the metro 3 (Blue line) or the Metro 4 (Green line). Both of them stops at Kalvin Square. Walk strait to Raday Street and just a short walk away there is Török Pál Street on the right hand side. On No 3 is the Benko Dixiland Club. On the Entrance the sign says Pince Színház.
The club-nights are on every Wednesday from 17 pm to 22 pm. The performance is from 18.30 till 21. 15.
Hungarians have to consider themselves very lucky, to have such a fantastic Internationally acclaimed Dixieland-jazz band on their doorstep.
The mood of the concerts is very intimate, the performance is fantastic, and for these few hours I felt myself at least 10 years younger.
There is two breaks, while you can go out to the buffet, to grab some bread with lard, or a bread with lard and chicken liver pieces. They give you chopped Spanish onion and hot green capsicum, to sprinkle onto the top of your bread slice. Of course there is booze also available.
So if you get hungry , or thirsty you just go to the buffet, collect some food and booze and you’re allowed to carry it back to the room, sit down, listening the music, eating your food and sipping your beer or wine.
I wrote above sit down. Be careful! You have to arrive early, because otherwise you won’t be able to find an empty seat. This club is always full, and the tickets (What is actually dirt cheap, 1500 HUF ) provides you only with the entry, but not the seat.
Yesterday was a special day because a young very talented banjo player, who is having a scholarship from the band, played a dual with Gáspár Pál, their regular man, and it was awfully good. The young guy had a good voice as well as an addition, and this performance just spiced up that unforgettable night.
I’ll try to and listen to them as many time as I can, and already have ticket for the middle of May.
If you like Dixieland and jazz music, go over there, and you will not regret it!

My Hungarian partner tells me this club has been going since 1967. The bandleader (Benko) is 74 (born 25.8.40) and the other original members are in that age bracket. The original band formed in 1957 apparently. So this is a bit like Preservation Hall in New Orleans, the members are constantly being replaced by younger players and if you want to hear as many original members as possible then don't wait too long.

The club has live music every Wednesday from 18:30-21:15 including two breaks. Rule number 1 is get there early as in before 18:00 preferably 17:30. Seats are limited. The club serves beer, wine and appetisers and the prices are very reasonable. a one-time admission is 1500 forints (about US $6) and if you are staying in Budapest you can buy a pass to the club for 12 months for F 7500 ($30). Two beers with snacks cost F1040 ($4) so this place is a bargain and you haven't heard the music.

They don't just play Dixieland but have a huge repertoire from tours in Hungary and overseas. Apparently they've played over 10,000 times and Presidents Reagan and George W. Bush both thought they were great (in 1987 and 2007 respectively). They play Blues, classical, some old romantic songs from the 50s and before, plus when we were there last night they had two "duelling" banjo players and wild banjo music. Some people were dancing as they played. You can go in and out during this nearly three hours for refills as do the players themselves. You can also speak to them during breaks because the club is quite small. I think there are 70 seats on the "audience" side plus the opposite side has tables and I'm guessing seats another 30. So its an intimate atmosphere and many of the patrons seem to be regulars.

If you like live music you'll love this place. If you're my age DON'T wear hearing aids because the music is very loud and any amplification is totally unnecessary.

We are regulars at this bar. One of the greatest contemporaty musician Benkó Sándor's dixieland and jazz band truly fantastic performances. Must arrive early. Always full. The place is quite small, but that is the beauty of it. You feel very special to be that close to the performance. You can also talk to the musicians during the break, as they will drink at the same bar as the audiance. Very friendly artists, and most talented jazz and dixie music. Well worth the time.
