“Aged, but OK”
Reviewed 4 April 2012

Sofitel in Budapest- a bit aged, in need of a revovation, but overall a good and nice hotel in a great location. Good breakfast. The building from the outside, in the middle of old Budapest, is a real eyesore though.

Room Tip: Take a rom with view to the Danube.

Positive: large room and bathroom, good location, very helpful and pleasant staff (even the cleaning staff), really big bed, nice swimming pool, good (but not amazing) breakfast

Negative: dark room, air conditioning doesn't work (this was mentioned by many reviewers, so I assume it is a problem in all rooms), constant background noise from the bathroom (this stopped me from sleeping on the 3 nights we spent there), tiny and very dark shower cubicle, hardly any pressure in shower, during our stay the shower gel, shampoo were not once replaced.

All in all this is a pleasant hotel, rooms are pretty ordinary, certainly no wow factor, but the lobby, breakfast area and bar are very nice. As I got a very good deal through a hotel booking site (£80/night including breakfast) I was very satisfied. Had I paid the full price (£130 - 190) I would have been disappointed.

Tip on taxis: Do not use the taxis parked outside the hotel as they are ridiculously expensive. In Budapest, always use one of the main taxi companies. They all have very easy numbers (like 555 5555), all you need to do is give them a quick call wherever you are (they will have English speaking staff), tell them your location and within no more than 10 minutes you will have the car and you will be charged reasonable and honest rates. Taxis that stand outside hotels and stations are called 'hyenas' in Hungary, they pray on foreigners' ignorance and they shamelessly charge triple or more the standard price.
This is also true for the airport. Never use the guys who ask you as you walk out if you want a taxi. The only official taxi company at the airport is Fotaxi, you walk outside the airport and their booth is located on the right. They have fixed prices according to the 3 or 4 different zones in Budapest, you will never be overcharged.

Stayed here for 4 nights in March. Had a wonderful time stayed in a room with a view of the river fantastic and well worth paying the extra.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Forgot to take electric converter hotel were happy to lend us one what they didnt say was there was going to be a charge of 5000 hfs about £14 for this only found out on check out.
Bar as with all hotels was a bit expensive but plenty of places outside to get a drink cheaper did not eat at the resturant so cant comment on this.

The room was very hot andthe air conditioning was next to useless did not cool room down even when at its coolest.

The rest was fine and would recomend the hotel

Room Tip: Get a room with river view

This is a great hotel on all counts. The rooms are extremely comfortable, everything is immaculate and in perfect repair, and the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and multilingual. The location is excellent: you're just a few yards from the Chain Bridge, in easy walking distance to many museums, historic sites, restaurants, and shops, and also about three blocks from Deak Ferenc Ter, the main metro interchange. It was such a comfortable and welcoming place to return to after a long day of sightseeing, and I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: My room was on the east side, and although I was just one floor up, I didn't hear any street noi...

Great hotel, as you would expect from the Sofitel brand, views from the bar are breathtaking!!
The famous Chain Bridge is visible from the Bar as are the, the river Tisa and the Parliament building on the hill top opposite.
You literally walk out of the front door turn left and you are a few paces away from the chain bridge and boat rides etc. While on the other side of the hotel is the famous Basci street, a pedestrian street with all the modern shops and café’s etc and monument square.
Very nice café here called the “Paris Café” good out door seating and you can hear various musicians playing from the square close by.
The room was spacious and top quality as were bathroom facilities. The hotel has nice restaurants and leisure areas.

The only thing which disappointed me was the odd internal shape of the hotel once you get onto the bedroom. All arranged in a square and it almost looks as if you are in a block of flats rather than a 5 Star Hotel!!!
Other than this great service, pleasant staff and nice place.
One thing to watch out for, which in no way is related to the hotel, but I’m putting here for information purposes, is the amount of open prostitution as you step out of the hotel. This one you can handle as you just walk away, but there is another scam, where a couple or young girls will approach you pretending to be lost and asking if you have a map of the city. They will then start up a conversation and try to convince you to join them at a local pub where there is live music etc
This is usually in a back street and if you do go you are more than likely to be mugged or get into some sort of trouble.
Again nothing to do with the hotel.

Room Tip: If you are driving there is overnight parking in the hotel secure car park at 25 euros per night.

The hotel is in an amazing location, convenient to a lot of things. Much care has been taken to renovate the lobby, hopefully the rooms will be next. Comfortable, but ready for a redo. Breakfast was quite good. They offered me a discount rate of 17 euros when I checked in and if I remember correctly that was at least 10 euros less that when booking online. Staff were all very pleasant. Special thanks to the head of reservations and the concierge who went out of their way to help me take care of a problem. I would highly recommend this hotel.
