As a guide in Budapest I have been talking about this "sight" for years to guests.
Yet, yesterday was the first time I went to try it myself.
Although I'm not a crazy fan of children, bringing our 3 months old and enjoying a couple stops, talking a bit (in Hungarian) to an 11-12 year old controller in his uniform and being in this small train with its distinct colours that made me feel like being in LEGOLAND was just great...

Go if you like:
- children
- small trains
- forests, hills

Don't expect:
- superb views
- super high speed :)

I visited the Children’s Railway in March...it really was a special experience and highly recommended as a pleasant trip out of the city. It wasn’t that easy to find...need to advertise it better but a real treat...the children were a delight, somber and very much engrossed in their duties...I got off at János stop and walked up to the observatory ( amazing views) and came down via ski lift which was so peaceful...bus at bottom right back not Centre

Can not believe we were the only people on the train how more tourists do not do this is mind boggling. We used the train to get to the chair lift. Got there on the cog railway then the replacement bus. The children were friendly and polite. They seemed to take what they were doing seriously. What added to our adventure was the snow. So If you are in Budapest in the winter do not be put off just adds to the experience.

We used the children's railway to get to the chair lift. The children do not speak English but then again I don't speak Hungarian and it is there country not mine. The whole experience seems to have come out from the cold war where the children salute the train at every stop and the carriage is heated with a wood burning stove. But it's clean and it's cheap at 800 HUF for a single ride.

Thanks to another trip advisor recommendation, we went. Public transportation is easy to take to get to the railway. However, the signage to actually find it once you get there is quite difficult. But don’t give up- and you’ll find it along with a small museum (and a clean bathroom). The train had a warm stove (yes, a stove) keeping the car cozy for the ride up the hill. We then walked to the tower (get off the train at the fourth stop) and took the chairlift down. Well worth it.
