14 of us - all adults - decamped from Castle Pokvar in a raid to occupy Gyor's beautiful central square and to enjoy a night of great food and wines at Palffy. I won't attempt to describe the food and wines we enjoyed in total, but just a selection - you HAVE to try the Pannonhelmina wines. They are about the best in the region, and we paid 10-15 Euros per bottle for them by the case at the Archabbey where they are made. Here in the restaurant they were 15-20 Euros per bottle. Unbelievably low mark-up! They were accompanied by great tuna tartare etc, for our appetisers, and you will definitely not be able to finish the "huge wiener schnitzel with fries" which was one of the main courses. I had the goulash (of course!) which was excellent - my wife had the salad, likewise excellent, and others enjoyed various different courses, but nobody had a bad word about their food. Desserts accompanied by local Tokay Furmint wine followed, and the total cost of this gastronomic extravagance was about 30 Euros per head - extraordinary value and service.
