Although booked 3 weeks in advance and secured by credit card - the promised apartment was not reserved for us, arguing that they have not recieved it from Venere.com... After some quarels they gave us an apartment, that included one bedroom with two seperate beds (that we joined together...) and a living room with two additional beds. A balcony, bathroom and kitchenette are also there. However the standards of the equpment was very low and everything was looking very aged. Internet Wi-Fi was not received in the rooms but only at the office, in contrary to the publications. They won't accept payment in Euros. The place is very near to the Austrian border.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are quieter and have more privacy.

Sopron is a great place. The people working at the hotel were very warm and friendly and willing to assist but the hotel itself was rather disappointing. The shower was either burning hot or totally cold. The unit was not very clean -- and very worn out. The unit was advertised as able to sleep 4 "in privacy" but the sofa for 2 in the living room was extremely uncomfortable and what seemed to make it private was a very noisy accordion door to the living room -- not great if any one in the living room sleep area had to get up to use the facilities during the night and go through that door. And, speaking of that, if you did use the facilities and turned on the light - the noise of the fan would wake up everyone. The shower and sink area could barely hold one person. Lights were burnt out in many of the walkways. We had a car so could go in and out (except when the gate broke in a closed mode). I do not know how someone without a car could stay at this hotel -- it is very far from the center of the city and of all activity. In short, far from 3 stars.

We arrived in Sopron via Vienna - about a 2hr train ride from the airport. A taxi ride from the Sopron train station to the hotel cost about $6.00.
Check-in was quick and we were very happy with our unit. The one-bedroom unit was well appointed and had a balcony overlooking a small green space. The resort is comprised of several three story buildings and is situated in a suburban woody area outside of dowtown Sopron. The area surrounding the resort is very quiet although I found that the walls of our unit were thin and I could at times hear the TV in the neighbouring unit as well as conversations.
We stayed at the resort in September and found activities limited. Information sheets listing offerings were posted in areas throughout the resort, but they were written in Hungarian, which we could not read. We basically used the unit as a base from which to explore the Western Transdanubia area of Hungary.
The kitchen had a small fridge, mirowave and four burner oven/stove. A coffee maker was also provided. There was also an assortment of pots and one frying pan along with a dish setting for five (which I found odd as there were only four kitchen charis). The bathroom had a hair dryer but NO toilettries were provide so bring some from home along with wash clothes.
There are several large grocery stores in Sopron - one is situated right outside the train station. Small "corner stores" open 24 hrs can also be found throughout the town and there seems to be a bakery on every street corner - amazing fresh bread and rolls!
There are two tourist centres, one in the inner town and one just down the street from the train station. At the latter you can rent bikes for about $10 for a 24hr period. The Lover Hills as well as the surrounding countryside have many bike/hiking trails - you can pick up guides at the tourist bureau - you can follow a trail from 10kms to one 150kms long. While we travelled throughout this area, it was not uncommon to pass numerous cyclists enjoying the countryside.
The resort is located in a suburb on a hill overlooking the old town of Sopron. It is about a 30 minute walk down hill to the centre of the old town where you can find numerous well priced restaurants and cafes. And pastry shops.. and the best ice cream ever! Delicious. Sopron is also in a wine growing area - try the local wine.
To save your feet for walking through the old town, you can take the bus for about $1.25/person. The bus stop is about a 5 minute walk from the resort. Sopron is well located for a day or an over night trip to Vienna as well as to tour the north, western part of Hungary. Although guide books state that a town can be easily reached by either bus or train, it is best to rent a car to maximixe ones flexibility. Be advised that there is NO car rental agency is Sopron. We had no difficulty getting by in English, most menus were tri-lingual - Hungarian, German and English. German is the most popular second language spoken. It is also recommended that you have a phrase book to help decipher bus and train schedules.
