Not the easiest place to find in Kaunas without a car, but worth the trouble. Not quite as well known as Auschwitz, but at least 50000 people were executed here by the Nazis during WW2, mainly Baltic Jews. The large sculptures at the site offer a powerful memory of the things which occurred here. There is also an old prison at the site which is open as a museum to remember the horrors which took place. Highly recommended while in Kaunas.

An immense and powerful monument which wasn't as clearly interpreted as we had expected when we visited in December. Though the Museum display is very moving and well presented we missed a more detailed background history. Also the place was freezing!

It's a nice place for the history lovers. The fort is a part of 20th Century history in Kaunas and a reflection of the drastic regimes those have influenced to the city and whole history of the country. It shows the sad story of Nazism regime those bitten the Lithuanian peoples (especially jews).

Big free of charge parking was available near the museum and fort.

We have taken the cheap guide and explored the old prison and underground tunnels. The underground was fantastic, exploring the areas for the political prisoners, going trough to the never ending long tunnels, breathing the filling of the past regime fulfilled with horror, sadness, disparateness...

IT'S REALLY WORTH TO VISIT THE TUNNELS WITH GUIDE in order to breath the history's air and finally to be grateful to the faith, that we didn't live those times.
Museum is also available for visiting in order to the evidences of Nacizm regime.

Definitely, the forth visit push us to evaluate the current way of living and helps to understand the life values.

It' s very simple- we should be grateful that we live in the countries where is NO WAR.

This museum comprises a former military fort (WWI and before), prison, and death camp. The exhibits are highly educational, the fort / prison is well-maintained. Also included are exhibits about Lithuanian suffering and political oppression under the Soviets, as well as an outdoor memorial to victims of the Nazi genocide in WWII.

I particularly appreciated the exhibit about Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat who sacrificed his career to save thousands of Jews fleeing the Nazis. The story of his moral courage alone makes this museum worth the trip. This is a must see.
