Seems as newly renovated, total of 3 floors. Clean small room but some smell from the bathroom. Breakfast area and buffet was good. Personnel very polite. Walking distance to most attractions in old town.

The pictures look great don't they?
Our experience did not match our expectations or the promises the description held.
The hotel lacked atmosphere and the room was nothing to write home about. Almost empty hotel, few guests and it did feel half closed.
A few niggles in our room but did not complain, for 2 nights not an issue. From a PR point of view, a room upgrade would have been in order. Breakfast is a let down with very average food and not so clean utensils. We certainly did not experience any of the grandeur advertised.
The staff were excellent though, very efficient and friendly.

Private and clean room, nice bathroom. Breakfast was exellent, you could order warm dishes omelets or pancakes just made for you. The staff was friendly and helpfull. The location was excellent in the middle of old town.

We stayed at Merchants House Hotel at Easter for two nights. Hotel was disappointment and did not meet our expectations. Definately not 4star hotel and worth its price. Hotel was ok though; but quite average. Breakfast was ok, but nothing special. Room was ok sized and clean but we heard every breath from our neighbour room and the noise from the street. Staff was not up to their duties and seemed a bit unfriendly.

Tallinn was our staging post, and the Merchant's House Hotel our bed for the night.
We had underestimated both.
Arriving in the middle of the day by train from St Petersburg, we caught a taxi from the Balti Jaam to the Merchant's House Hotel. In fact we had barely packed ourselves into the cab when we were getting out again: mere spitting distance as it were, and our driver was consequently quite surly and gruff - waiting all morning for a few lousy Euros!
The final 50 metres involved clattering our overweight baggage down a car-free cobbled laneway to the hotel's nondescript entry door.
Reception was manned by a pair of welcoming, English speaking behemoths, one of whom was strong enough to lead us up the corridor ramp, out into the courtyard, up some steps, through the courtyard, down some steps, back through a door into the building, up a step or two, and to our two rooms all the while carrying our two heaviest suitcases.
The hotel is an amalgam of old multi-level houses and stores, once the domain of the burghers and merchants in the old city, as is proclaimed by it's name.
Both our rooms had windows looking out - at a very low level - to a quiet but trafficked hibernal courtyard, and while not luxuriant, they were spacious, comfortable and most impressively, quirky. For example, the second bedroom featured its bed on a platform raised above the floor, as if on a pedestal for an unseen audience. (Or perhaps, we mused, an audience may be quickly gathered.) While each had an ensuite bathroom they were unconvincing adaptations, and a shower - which, it must be said, was deliciously hot and strong - was only possible in one of the rooms. The freestanding bath in the other was, nonetheless, a comfort in itself.
After re-humanising, a slow, twenty second wander further down Dunkri, our laneway, found us amidst the happy churn and bustle of weekend shoppers and tourists at the Christmas markets in the quaint and picturesque old town square. On a stage in one corner were choralists entertaining an engaged crowd of all ages; nearby the focus of the square a beautiful large tree was decorated with tinsel and baubles, enlivened by the flickering of real candles added by market-goers as tradition dictates. There were stalls of clothes, of gloves and hats and furs, of preserves and jams and chutneys; stalls offering hot food, and cold beer. We partook pork sausage and sauerkraut as was our want!
We then wandered further afield where we were constantly enthralled and enchanted by the beauty of the old town of Tallinn. We fell in love with the place.
Long after the sun had dipped below the spires and steep tiled roofs, and the cold had moved in to fill the darkened spaces, we returned to the hotel to find the comfort of the blazing log fire in the lobby.
That night we all slept well.
A full breakfast - included in the room tariff - was taken and enjoyed in the hotel basement, a wonderful contrivance of brick-vaulted cellar spaces connecting below street level all of the merchant's houses above.
As the hotel had connected us to the joys of the beautiful old town of Tallinn.
