Description: In 1999, Estonia's first garlic restaurant, Balthasar, was open in the very heart of the Old Town of Tallinn, Town Hall Square, in the building of Town Hall Drugstore. Balthasar immediately won numerous fans due its unique menu and interior. Wooden interior, characteristic of a medieval building and excellent renovation contribute to the aristocratic atmosphere of the building. An excellent view of the Town Hall Square opens from t he windows of the restaurant.

It was like stepping back in time entering the "Garlic Restaurant" as its known. Dark wood everywhere everything old and reminiscent of a diningroom 100years ago.
The food and service were first class and yes garlicky but not over done.
Garlic ice cream should not work but it hsd to be tried and it was superb. My choices of snails, venison and white chocolate mousse gave me a meal of sublime tastes and we all loved every course.
Tallinn has been good for food but this has to be our best meal of the trip.
If you like fine dining its a must.

Thank Gary C

Here are good snippets from other reviews:

"Balthasar is literally hidden from the street." - Yes, you can see the large sign outside the building, but you might walk past the stairs which are just inside the tunnel. (There are a lot of stairs.)

"..this cosy, mediævalish place was almost empty. The waiters did not, however, seem to find the time to keep an eye on the few customers, so I cannot say the service would have been very attentive" - The restaurant is in several rooms of a very old building which might have been a cause; also this is probably not a good place for large groups. We had a late lunch at about 13:30 when it was not crowded and we experienced first class service.

" ...The lobster-shrimp soupe will make you swallow you tongue ..." - A very interesting description ! Yes our group of five friends tried different foods and all were excellent!

Comments varied regarding price. - Much of the wine is expensive, but of good quality according to a person in our group who is a wine expert and often orders bottles of wine in the $50 t0 $100 range. He said that the restaurant made excellent choices of fine wines from different regions of the world.
- Personally, for lunch on a warm day I ordered beer and I was happy with everything.

We had dinner in this exceptional restaurant... The food was delicious, the portions big enough and the prices reasonable! It is a modern twist of local cuisine. It is very romantic to dine in such a historic building... I recommend that you should make a reservation, in order to book table in the front dining hall, because we felt a little bit isolated in the back...

Old fashioned restaurant up a spiral staircase, slightly olde world and slightly dark but a really appealing atmosphere with live classical musicians. Very nice varied menu, my wife had the duck and I had the tuna steak both beautifully cooked with a very nice selection of vegetables. If you like garlic this is the place for you as it’s well represented here. Friendly staff with v good food, recommended . Bill
