“december holiday”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2011

Hi to all

We went to the hotel cabanas on 05/12/2011.

the food was self service , not lots of choice for main course , and breakfast was beans scrabbled egg and tined sausage, and cereal. very basic .but acceptable.

we did not expect Munch happening as it was December, but there was no entertainment at all in the evening, just sat and played cards.

all the shops on the sea front had closed except supermarkets and a few cafes

in the hotel nearly all the information was in German ,but saying that the reception staff are very helpful but did not speak very good English

we were there for a week, there were other groups which came for 3 to 4 days brake, as it was all inclusive , they basically were drunk from the time they came til the time the left.

if you can hold your drink that's fine, but unfortunately it caused a fight in the bar and a lot of swearing, at one time we all at two go into another room until the fitting calmed down.

its a shame the staff are very nice and help full.

on the good side , the salad was fresh and the room was clean, and the beds was relay comfortable.

Had a lovely stay at this large but low key complex. Really friendly helpful staff, nice atmosphere, excellent facilities (2 outdoor pools, 1 indoor pool - swimming cap obligatory so take one or pay a one off 2.50 to buy one there, entertainment finished now as end of season, exercise classes, gym, sauna, tennis courts, volleyball, table tennis, small kids climbing wall, kids club now closed as end of season, free boat transfer over to nearby island for beautiful deserted beach, 2 bars - one now closed as end of season). The food was great. Huge array of good quality help yourself style food, only one or 2 things we didn't like which is to be expected and is a matter of personal taste. Rooms were very comfortable and well furnished and equipped. Needs a little updating here and there but really excellent value for money. Would recommend all inclusive as making good money sense. You don't need to eat all your meals there if you don't want to but we saved tons of money by not being forced out onto the streets every time you want a meal and not having to shell out for every drink and cup of coffee. Train (station 2km away), bus (outside hotel - infrequent at weekends), or Taxi (18 euros), or water taxi (around 20 euros) into Tavira. Or hire bicycles from the hotel and ride the back road in. Hotel 7km away from Tavira in a town called Cabanas. Nice enough little town, not tons to do there. Would recommend hiring a car to explore the area - hotel can arrange for you. Hotel also organise various excursions. Nice mix of families, older people, couples. Not rowdy or trashy. Expect a nice relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: No sea views due to the orientation of the landscape. Pool view nice, partial sea views available.

This was a fantastic holiday - accommodation was comfortable although required some updating the food was excellent although a bit repetitive, the hotel is still being modernised so looking forward to returning. the staff were ever so friendly and very helpful.

we stayed here at he beginning of october 2011 and had a nice relaxing week. Our room was comfy and clean although the air con was unpreditable but that didn't cause us to much of an isse. The pools are clean and the bigger pool is ideal for young children as is sectioned of to ankle hight for them.

The food was fine a i am a fussy eater but there was always something for me to eat and i did not go hungry although there isn't a large selection.

The hotel is full of european and the evning entertainement is aimed at the German and the French although they do try and engage the British it is clear that we are not the priority inthe entertainement stakes.

For the price we paid this was good value and you can see that in its day it was a 5* resort but is a little tired.

All staff that we came into contact with were helpful and friendly.

Be aware though that there are only a few shops and bars locally and Tavera is 7km away which is about 10 Euro taxi ride or a bus ride (we did walk it and would not recommend it as you are walking down Portugals equvilant to the M25 and are very exposed)

The first apartment was for sure below 2 star and even then I would say that was generous the bath looked about 70 years old. We were lucky that we managed to get upgraded to a newly renovated one. It was two flights up with no air conditioning but worth the move as I would have had to book in somewhere else the first one was so bad. I was told that Portugal had a good star rating and a three star there was the same as a four anywhere else that is not the case. I think though this was my first visit to Portugal and I would not bother going back much the same as going to the costa's. However the staff were the most friendly and helpful that I have ever encountered anywhere nothing was too much bother. I usually would not mention a particular member of staff but Gordon the hotel travel rep was great. We had no hotel rep and most of the guests were French German and Polish so it was difficult. Gordon explained the bus service recommended a wonderful trip that was more than good value for money. I would recommend that if you are going then you book the Historical Algarve for a mere 30 Euros (extra for lunch) Great!!!!

Room Tip: Ensure your star rating is higher than average when booking

Just returned from a fortnight at the PrimaSol Golden Club, on arriving the reception was very basic dull and uninviting, we arrived about midnight and was given the keys to our accomodation. Some of the apartments look lovely but I was informed the modern apartments are for the French, Polish and some Germans, the English get the old apartments. Our apartment was at the very far end of the complex it was awful, like something that has never been touch since the 1960's, the table had large burn marks on it, the beds were so hard it was like sleeping on the floor, the bathroom had a large tile missing from the bathside and a carrier bag stuffed underneath the bath what was in it I don't know, the bathroom door was all split at the bottom from water damage, and the bathroom had additional guests cockcroaches. At night we could'nt sleep as we were eaten alive either with mosquitoes (even though we put protective spray on) fleas or bed bugs, I could'nt wait to get home, and had to visit the doctors when I did as the bites were so bad, I got put on steroid tablets and given cream. My son and two grandsons were all biten too. The swimming pool has tiles missing all over it and on the second day my grandson cut his toe on a broken tile. The food is the same day in day out, one wall says childrens buffet which always consistered of chips, bread and cheese slices, could they not put a few sausages or pizza on for the kids. The only good thing was that the staff were lovely and pleasant both in the restaurant and bar. We paid £3300 and it was money wasted would'nt go back there if they offered me a free holiday. We asked to be moved three times but was told it was not possible has the hotel was full, I told them about the bites and cockcroaches as I did'nt want someone else having to put up with it so hopefully they did something about it, England rain glad to be back home. I haver put photos on for people to view.

We have stayed here twice now, during the world cup in Jume 2010 then again in May 2011.
We returned because we knew exactly what we were going to get.
The rooms are not luxurious but the ones we stayed in have been clean and equipped with the basics including a fridge and hob. The website shows some more luxurious rooms but we were told these were not available to us. We were in the main block near reception on both occasions.
The food is canteen style but is of a decent standard and there was always plenty that the kids would eat but at this place it only makes financial sense to go all inclusive. Just don't expect gourmet and you will be pleasantly surprised.
On the all inclusive the drinks at the bar are good, Super Bok lager, pool bar open most days, plus there is coffee all day and then snacks in the afternnoon, ice cream, crisps, hot dogs, cake, sandwiches.
The figure 8 shaped outdoor pool is great for the kids as it has a really big shallow end although it is a little tired around the edges with the odd loose or missing mosaic tile. There is also a second outdoor pool and an indoor pool (bathing cap required).
The complex is a very short walk from the village with supermarket, bars, cafes and restaurant. Really pleasant modern "boardwalk" down the front. The area actually fronts on to a lagoon not the sea. This is a really quiet resort.
The beach is amazing, really long and unspoiled, proper sand. and this is a short boat ride across the lagoon. The hotel have 2 boats running across all day, takes about 2 minutes in the boat then 5 minutes walk over the dunes to the beach. Either take foods & drink or head back at lunch. If it is bright take a sunshade for the kids.
The nearest main town is Tavira which is 10 minutes or 8 euros in a taxi, worth a look round but very hot on both times we have been.
This hotel seems very popular with German, Dutch, French and northern european holidaymakers, not so many British families but we really liked the mix, particularly during the world cup when there was no rivalry at all and big screens set up all over the hotel.
Also bike hire was very cheap, 8 euros for a day, and we used them to have a good look around the town and the abandoned fort in the woods.
In summary this is a great place where you can relax, have a drink, not worry about food and let the kids enjoy the pool and kids club. We had amazing weather on both trips It could be a bit miserable it the weather was bad I would imagine but if you have young kids and you are looking for a reasonable all inclusive this would suit.
Finally a special mention for Gordon on reception. He was very knowledgeable, sorted a few minor glitches for us and can organise all kinds of trips and excursions. He also seems fluent in about 20 languages.
