“Arrogant , limited but flavoursome”
Review of Rona's

Rona's
Ranked #13 of 31 Restaurants in Akaroa
Price range: US$9 - US$29
Description: Laid-back dining, living room and garden serving simple but seasonal-with-attitude dishes, happily rooted in a style of cuisine seldomly experienced in New Zealand. Roasting, smoking, preserving & infusing are just typical ways you'll experience your food. Local ingredients, bragging with flavours.

Everyone in town was recommending this restaurant.
The menu is extremely limited. The night we went there was no staek so there was no meat dish available at all - unless you wanted the shoulder of lamb for 4 people.
There was a choice of 2 desserts.
Charges for bread.
Staff were dissmissive and disinterested.
We had two dishes- mussels and ravioli which were both flavoursome but expensive and small "tasting" portions.
Cannot recommend on service or overall experience but yes flavoursome titbits....

I had not heard of this restaurant as it is quite new - we were attracted by the building and once we read the reviews, we were intrigued enough to go inside.

This place exceeded my expectations. I have been to most of the best restaurants in the South Island (Hopgood's, Rata, Fleur's Place, Botswana Butchery, etc) and this is on par with the others, if not better.

We did not have a reservation and were lucky enough to get a seat at the cosy bar. The setting is unique - in an old historic house (there is even a shower in the bathroom!), it is not your average dining experience. It's special. The atmosphere is really laid-back, not pretentious or stuffy. It has a relaxed local feel.

The staff reflect this vibe. They are friendly, accommodating, welcoming and casual while still being very knowledgeable and professional. They care about where they work, they appreciate the food. We were really impressed with our server Sabrina - she really knows what she's doing. We ordered a bottle of natural wine and she made sure we were happy with our selection before making the purchase.

Lastly, the food. It was easily one of the best meals I have had in New Zealand. We ordered the tomato salad, cauliflower, ricotta gnocchi and pork shoulder. These four tapas-style plates were plenty for two people. We also had the lemon meringue pie. Every dish was out of this world - the cauliflower was my favourite. Two words: grapefruit mayonnaise.

This place is truly gourmet, and it is something Akaroa has been missing. It is absolutely perfect. Not over the top, not ritzy, but quaint and historic and full of character and warmth and some INSANELY amazing food.

Recommended by previous AirBnB travellers, so that was an ideal invitation to book ... even before leaving Oz!
Not disappointed. The restaurant is open to the courtyard & garden & features a lovely vegie garden, so it's not just hype when you learn their menu is based on seasonal produce.
A limited Tapas / share style suited us nicely ... the two of us shared 3 plates. Crispy Cauliflower, Ricotta gnocchi & a tangy tomato dish; all superb.
The Lemon Meringue desert capped off with coffees saw us walking away with a smile on our dial.
The service was excellent.

We arrived and we had booked a table for 6.30 on line but the place was not open till 7.00pm. No problem we were taken to the bar and given a complimentary bottle of wine while we waited.
At the table we all selected different dishes to share, it was great they did not all come at the same time so we were able to savour each dish.
The show dish was the lamb shoulder which was excellent. But I liked the cauliflower dish and the free mussel dishes we also chose.
Best to choose one dish per head then order more if still hungry.

The food is nice but service was terrible. Despite having a reservation we kept being told they would ‘try and fit us in’. My wife had to eventually show them our name in the reservation book.
And the place is filthy.

The bathroom seems to be being used by someone for showering.

Not a good experience.

Thank you for your review Tim H,

We do have a shower in our wee bathroom - Yes its a little quirky but we operate a heritage building, and no it isn't used.
Thanks for the feedback!

Cheers,

The Rona's Team.
