It’s been three years since we visited the caves. We planned a trip when we heard they were reopening the caves in 2012, while taking precautions against the bat affected white nose fungus. The precautions include a short informative message from a DNR rep and bleach treated mats visitors walk through before and after visiting the caves. Very easy, no big deal.
We took our grandkids, ages 8 and 9, to the caves for an afternoon outing. We all loved it. None of the caves are too scary; some are so small the kids could enter by themselves without fear. There’s a nice picnic area off the parking lot/restrooms so bringing drinks and snacks or lunch works great. Three years ago we brought the same kids to the caves and they loved it just as much when they were 5 & 6. An extra pair of shoes is advisable as some caves are muddy.

We took a trip to the caves on a Saturday and it was awesome. If you are adventurous and are planning on exploring some caves, make sure you wear old clothes and bring a flashlight. If not, there are plenty of great trails you can walk along. Either way, it is a great time for all ages and anyone who loves being outdoors.

The caves are awesome, a lot of fun for adventurous adults and kids alike. If you are looking for exciting vacations within Iowa, Maquoketa is a must see, just remember to bring extra shoes and clothes you really don't mind soiling.
