We've been to the White Mountains of New Hampshire many times, each time I find yet another Awe moment that I some how missed the last time we were there. We decided to go up mid foliage season, (second, third week in October, foliage was a little later this year). It's a great time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings before the skiing crowd arrives. You have to take in the beauty of Bear Notch Road, it's about 30 miles of breath taking beauty with various scenic stops to get every angle. Add the colors with the sounds of the rivers going down stream and you're at peace.
