Walking from the Capitol, through the (admittedly currently quite dug up) National Mall to the Lincoln Memorial is a walk through the American story, warts and all. The National Air and Space Museum, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial are my three personal highlights.

If there's a protest, it happens here. If you want to go for a jog, do it here. Need to sit on a bench for an hour? Do it here. Always something going on even if it doesn't seem like it.

It is the one must-see/must-do thing in DC. If you had a five minute layover at Reagan, you grab a taxi and go here, and just wander around, catch lunch at the American Indian Museum and taxi back to catch your flight.

The Mall is such a wonderful site. You can see DC's most iconic features: the Washington Monument on one side and the Capitol in the other. Plus, the Smithsonian Museums line its sides and it just makes for a wonderful place for pictures, walking, anything. I really like this place.

The National Mall runs from the Lincoln Memorial to the US Capital. Along the way there is the MLK, Washington, and WWII memorials. On either side of the mall are the Smithsonian museums. One of its many uses is the national July Fourth holiday celebration.
