this is interesting but not that interesting as it doesn't have enough narrative

“Not exactly what I was expecting...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2011

We chose to visit the Old Post Office Pavilion to get a great view of the city. When we arrived in the building (after some high security), we found a ratty looking area with shopping and a food court. After wandering around, we found an elevator to take us up to the bell tower. The tour of the buiding was self-guided and not too informative. There are some laptops hanging next to exhibits which play videos, which we elected not to watch. We made it up to the observation deck (with rusty hands from the stairwell) to find a not so stellar view, partially due to rainy conditions. Even if the weather were better, I question whether this would be a worthwhile attraction to visit again. Be aware, you are partially subject rain and snow when you are on the observation deck!

“High security for a food court?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2011

I had been to this mall several times in the past, and we decided to go there again, just to get a snack. What a disappointment - long before we got in. We walked up to the front doors, and all but one had a sign that read "Use center door." When we opened that door and looked in, it was dark and we could see something which looked like a box inside the door about 3 feet from where we were standing. We thought we must have made a mistake, so we closed the door and re-read the signs on the doors. We tried that center door again and this time checked more closely what was inside. It turned out to be a security checkpoint, the kind you see at the airport, with a couple of security men there. We asked if this was still a mall, and they said it was a food court. So we went in, putting our items through the x-ray machine and stepping through the metal detector. Once inside we did find the food court, but we were disgusted with all the security and decided to just leave. My only thought is that this building must still be owned by the US Government, which would explain all the security. We didn't try to go to the tower, so maybe the security related to that. We'll never know.

“Former Glory”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 December 2011

The building itself has a wonderful history and is worth seeing. The problem is that it's now full of tourista shops and lousy food....and they closed the bell tower which gave a spectacular bird;s eye view.

“Bird's eye view of the Mall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2011

The view from the top of the tower is amazing, and a good alternative to the Washington monument which is closed following the August 2011 earthquake.
Interesting close up view of the bells and interesting explanations of bell ringing in the lower levels.
