The food is French so very filling. The ambiance in the summer is great, they have the windows open and the interior design is very formal.

I had the French onion soup which was a great start if you are really hungry. This could be a meal in itself. Then I had the vegetable tagine which I could not finish due to the portion. This is a great place for small parties for dinner.

Only thing I didn't like is there is definitely a space issue in the restaurant. I had to ask to move tables once because our table was basically pinned against the wall.

So I'm from California and my daughter and friends go to GW. This was her birthday and restaurant of choice. Le Diplomate was very enjoyable with excellent service and a casual but inviting atmosphere. We were a group of six. The food was excellent for each of us. We had the Vegetable Tagine, the Salmon, an excellent omelette and the Pasta Primavera. All were delicious. Prices are moderate. Attire is casual but not overly so. Jeans work when matched with appropriate dress options. We will return here next time in town.

Interesting menu choices that were well executed. Between us we had quite a variety of dishes with only a vegetable tagine that misfired.

Service was attentive and accurate.

The ambience is alright though it was so busy and bustling that it was quite noisy.

Overall, Excellent

Busy restaurant with French menu and bistro decor. We ate here during a trip to DC and booked ahead as it seemed a popular destination.

We were seated in a pleasant window booth and our server was friendly and chatty.

We started with six oysters (European and Maine), plus a mushroom gruyere tart. The oysters were fresh and succulent and the tart had beautiful, buttery, flaky, pastry.

We had the Dover sole meuniere for mains. The fish was fresh and meaty, but slightly overpowered by a lot of salty butter, and too much citrus. The accompanying potatoes, were good but also swimming in butter.

The desserts of profiteroles (tough choux pastry) and baba armangac (too much heavy cream and doughy cake) were disappointing.

The Saint Veran wine was Good, from an extensive list.

Our complaints wouldn't prevent us from returning, we liked overall.

The good news on a Sunday afternoon at Le Diplomat is that they don't take reservations, so we walked right in. On the other hand, you don't get the full menu. But the shortened menu looked good, and the atmosphere and temperature on the patio were fine.
The staff was attentive, with several of the staff members attending to our needs. The fresh bread was crusty and full of flavor. It would be worth going to Le Diplomat just for the bread.
Steak tartare was a winner. Subtle flavors and a nice texture. The chicken paillard was good, but I've had better in other restaurants. The mussels had a nice flavor. The apple tarte tatin was complemented nicely by the vanilla ice cream. All in all, a good meal. Very good coffee to round out the early evening.
