“My favorite hotel in DC! Location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

Affordable and awesome location. Great staff. I really only visit DC for the location, and this is the BEST location, unless you want to fork out more than double the cost of the hotel. The rooms and the hotel itself are nothing special, actually quite bland and getting old. But they are clean and I never have had any problems. This is a great hotel for sighsteeing. Literally within the sight line of Fords Theater, within a 5 minute walk to the mall and the White House. Love it! Food downstairs is fine. No complaints. Room service was from the same restaurant and was fine too.

We researched extensively on hotels in DC. Notwithstanding some negative reviews about the condition of this hotel, we decided to book it based on the price and location. I am glad we chose this hotel! We loved it! This hotel is no doubt old but that only adds to the charm of a historical city like DC. As long as the hotel and beds are clean, the dated hotel is not an issue. We booked a family suite and were allocated two adjoining rooms with a queen bed and three single beds and had double bathrooms and tvs. We loved looking down into the streets below. I am a light sleeper but the traffic noise did not bother me. I believe they also have inside family suites. There were plenty of other tourists and school kids staying at the hotel but we did not hear any noises at all so the rooms must be very well insulated.
We had breakfast at the Harriets Family Restaurant downstairs but did not like it. I would like to recommend Lincoln Waffle House on the next street opposite Ford Theatre. Has great ambience and they have a large selection for breakfast.
Best part of this hotel is its location which is so central to all the tourist sights. Only two blocks to the mall, Natural History and American History Museums. Nearest metro stop is Metro Center which is only two blocks away. Lots of restaurants, eateries, McDonald and retail and souvenir shops in the vicinity. Walking distance to the buzzling Chinatown too. Nice to be able to go back to the hotel to rest our aching feet in between sight seeing.
Now, for some minor issues......hotel has no attached parking garage, wireless internet gets a bit spotty at times, bath does not drain fast enough because water pressure is so great and some wall plugs are loose. One unusual thing we discovered is that room heating is controlled by the hotel.
If you are looking for somewhere that is cheap, clean and centrally located, then Harrington Hotel does the job. Would stay again and recommend to travellers on a budget.

Room Tip: Corner rooms on the higher floors have nice views of the city buildings.

I stayed at the Hotel Harrington 13th-17th February 2012, as part of a school trip with 16 teenagers. For that, this hotel was in an amazing location, clean and comfortable. If, however I was going on holiday here or was chosing here of my own free will, I am not sure I would have actually stayed the night and would have asked for my money back!

The hotel is filled with school groups (not a bad thing) as they are all gone throughout the day, thay are quiet at night as they are all so tired and have to be in bed by 10pm on return to the hotel. The breakfasts are decent with french toast, bread and toasters, bacon, scrambled eggs. Porridge and cereals, apples and bananas. Pleanty to get you started for the day. There is a shop with reasonably priced water and pop, sweets and souviniers, open from 8-11, which is very useful.

Check in was easy, and there are pleanty of lifts to all floors. The rooms assume that the occupants will share a double bed if the need to (if our students weren't so good, we would have had to move rooms but they just got on with it) in a group of 4 boys - there was one double and two singles, the same with a girls room, so please be careful if you have younger students that wouldnt share!

The rooms were clean with baths and showers all en suite. The rooms are very worn, years of chipped paintwork, broken parts, marks on walls and the electric system should be condemmned!! - One of our students saw a flash of blue light when she tried to plug in her phone charger.
There is no main light in the rooms only lamps and no spare sockets for chargers so you have to unplug something to use it. Also, if you have a uk hairdryer it is almost useless due to the voltage differences - don't bring a travel one!
The noise from the street is quite loud on certain sides, so you may want to take ear plugs, starts at 5am.

The beds are very soft! - but are clean and were made every day, and the tv was great with a very large range of channels. The fridge in my room was really cold, though I didnt use it much. The shower is nice and powerful although not always controllable and would suddenly give you a hot or cold blast, as with the other fixtures it was worn, and full of limescale, but it worked! I dont think the hotel is unclean as previously stated I just think it is so worn and old that you couldnt possibly have it "clean", there is limescale, chipping paint and marks that soap and sprays could not remove, it will have to be refitted at some point, as It surely cannot last ten more years in this condition - It would not be legal in the UK.

- Be careful of the hotel "safe" we stored money and passports of 18 people before finding out it was not a safe but a shelf behind a manned counter. This is clearly not a safe, and I'm unsure if it was manned 24/7 but we felt a bit daft thinking our stuff was safely locked away when realistically it was on a shelf 2 metres behind the desk.

The wifi was good, and the location is amazing, right near everything. There is a Hard Rock cafe just round the corner, a Barnes and Noble with a Starbucks inside across the street and is 10 mins to china town (Ruby Tuesdays was excellent). With a 10 million pound overhall this hotel would be amazing due to it's location - but students would lose out as it would be come unaffordable. I would stay again with students - but not with family on a holiday.
Ive stayed in worse on a school trip!

Room Tip: Rooms facing Barnes and Noble and not the offices are quieter.

I'll say it upfront - this hotel is not flash. But it was perfect for what we needed.
We flew in from Australia and, after around 26 hours of flights and rushing to and from and through airports, we checked into the Hotel Harrington. The front desk staff were efficient and helpful, the room we had was fine (a fairly large room with 2 Queen beds and a single for the 5 of us (2 adults and 3 children aged 3, 5 and 7)), and the restaurants and bars downstairs provided us with the sustenance we needed! In particular, we hit Ollie's Trolley that night for some burgers and shakes, which was awesome.
Then there's the location - the White House maybe 10 minutes walk to the west, the National Mall and the Smithsonian 10 minutes to the south, Ford's theatre one block to the east. Plus lots of stores and bars and things in the immediate vicinity (in particular, the T-Mobile store across the street for a US simcard and a 1 month $50 unlimited everything plan, Barnes & Noble around the corner for books for the kids, and Capitol City Brewing 3 blocks north on 11th St for craft beers!)
Breakfast was also good - nothing flash, but good - and the reception staff helped us get a large cab when we left to go pick up the RV we were hiring from Arlington!
When combined with the historic building, it's a great option for families visiting from out of town and just wanting a hotel that makes things easy and which is right in the centre of things.

This was defianatly the worst hotel experience i have ever had. The service was useless! A broken fridge filled with rotting food from the week before remained in the room throughout the four nights. The room cleaner was extremly lazy and refused to replace our towls or even dress our beds. She did however happen to help herself to the change which we left on our bedside locker each day. The location was the only upside to this hotel. Oh, and the food was terrible.

We have stayed at the Harrington Hotel two times. The latest being this past October. We love the location. You are half a block from Pennsylvania Ave. and just two blocks from the White House. The hotel itself is old, but that adds to the historic nature of being in DC. The rooms are clean, don't look too close at the baseboards, the beds very comfortable. Very safe location. We walked back and forth to the hotel several times at night. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Both times we stayed we ran into tour groups of kids from other countries. You can easily walk to all DC sites. We have stayed at all types of hotels, B&B's, etc. Yes, the Harrington is not a 4 star hotel but hey, with a family of 4 who wanted to enjoy DC and not spend all day soaking by a pool, it is the right location for us.

The Harrington Hotel opened on March 1, 1914 making it the nation’s oldest continuously operating hotel. Just a half block from Pennsylvania Avenue and two blocks from the White House, the Harrington is within walking distance to many D.C. attractions and the Metro.

While not in the luxury class of other D.C. hotels, the Harrington is clean, tidy and has some excellent family-friendly room rates, although the decor is a bit outdated. The hotel also houses a full service restaurant and pub.
