Omni Shoreham Hotel
Ranked #79 of 142 Hotels in Washington DC
Reviewed 8 April 2012

My frist stay at the Omni Shoreham left me regretting I did not find this hotel long ago. The Omni Shoreham is a very good hotel. First, the bed is fantastic and the bathroom is huge. Next, the breakfast buffet is good and much better than other DC hotels. Lastly, the location is a huge plus factor for commuting by car or Metro. The Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station is less than 150 yards away. Driving is a breeze since the hotel sits off Rock Creek Parkway (unusually light traffic by DC standards). Valet parking service is $33/day.

Stayed there for a work conference on March 28-30 (3 nights).

Overall my stay there was average. The hotel was a very nice place.
Rooms: large, but the bathroom was small with little counter space for items. A little banged up. (doors, locks, etc)
Beds: comfy and nice.
Free juice in the morning was great. Delivered every morning for us as requested. 7:15am
Front lobby: really nice!
Staff: very friendly and nice.
Location: depends on what you require. $15 cab to National Mall area. 15 min walk to National Zoo. Lots of food choices in the area.

Negative! The internet. The worst internet connection in all the hotels i've stayed at. I was there for a conference and required internet access. It was impossible to do anything. We called tech support twice and was told nothing could be done because it is a large hotel. I've been to bigger hotels and everything is good there. Tech support said connection btwn 2.0 to 5.0 mbps was great for wireless. (what?!) I usually get 54 mbps speed everywhere else.

Thank you for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. We apologize for your issues concerning wireless internet. The layout and age of our building has presented challenges with signals in some areas of the building but we are committed to adding access points and continuing to make improvements to our network. We are glad that otherwise you had a great stay and we hope you will return soon.

Our family of 3 stayed here for 2 nights, after 4 nights in Alexandria. It is a beautiful historic hotel with a stunning lobby and lovely gardens. Our room with 2 queen beds was large and tastefully decorated. Loved the idea of the book lights attached to the headboards! All of the staff that we encountered was nice, helpful, and accommodating. The Zoo Package was a great rate which included valet parking, and a lavish buffet breakfast. Not enough elevators, but since we were on vacation, it was not an issue. Would probably be a concern if you are traveling on business, but just get a room on a lower floor and walk the stairs. Very convenient to lots of restaurants, and the metro station. Would definitely recommend this hotel, and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We were on the 7th floor, but request a lower floor if you want to use the stairs, and not wait for...

Family stayed at Omni Shoreham for Passover. Wonderful hotel with terrific outdoor pool. Overnight parking is a bit expensive but there is some on street parking nearby.

This is a pretty cool hotel with a lot of history. It does have a little wear and tear, given the old age of the hotel... but overall I'd say it was kept in pretty good shape. I didn't feel creepy or grossed out in it like I have in some modern hotels. The elevators are super duper slow and cramped... There was always the option of taking the stairs, but who wants to do that after trotting around DC all day? The hotel has a gift shop that sells souvenirs, magazines, OTC medications, etc... and there was also a coffee shop that sells Starbucks... but it's all very over priced. It was $4.50 for a tall, skinny mocha... and I normally pay around $3 dollars for one anywhere else I go. If you get the "Zoo Package", you get free valet parking (you still have to tip, though...blah), and a free breakfast buffet coupon for every guest for every morning of your stay. Do take advantage of that. There was a great variety of fresh, organic food there... For FREE! A great value if you know how expensive staying in DC can get. There are a lot of great restaurants around this hotel like "Open City", "Italian Pizza Kitchen" and even a nice little chain place I'd never heard of called "Noodles and Company." If you're willing to hoof it a short ways down into Adams Morgan... there is a place called "Astor Mediterranian" which is simply delicious. The Smithsonian National Zoo is like 3 or 4 blocks away, and the metro station is about 1. We really liked that.

I guess if I had one major complaint about this hotel, it would be the housekeeping service. They were always forgetting to leave something... Sometimes we would return to find no towels/hand towels/wash cloths at all, and sometimes we would just be missing wash cloths, or just hand towels, etc... They did give us a lame excuse one time about why we weren't getting certain things, but they were always quick to bring us what we needed when we called and asked for it.

Oh... Another thing that kind of "ticked us off" about this place was that when we signed up for the select/preferred (whatever!) guest program, we were entitled to a free juice or coffee delivered to our door every morning. All you have to do is hang the card on the door to specify what you want... Seemed simple enough, so we thought we would take advantage of it just one time. We hung our card on the door long before the 2am cut-off time, requesting our refreshments be delivered by 8:15am, and when that time rolled around... we received nothing!! When we called to find out what had happened, we were given another lame excuse ("maybe they're just running late"?? hmmm... ya think???)... but our coffee and juice was delivered after a while, and all was right in the world again. Haha.

So the Omni does rectify problems promptly, but I do wish they would tighten up their ship and prevent these things from happening in the first place. It really is a great hotel with great value, in a great location!

PS: The pillows are to die for. We had to have them -- so we called and found out that they are only $18 dollars a piece, and the warehouse that has them is located in our own city, so we're picking some up today :-)

Room Tip: Get a room on the lower levels because of the elevator situation mentioned above...

Minimal services available. Cannot even get a soft drink after midnight. I found the lack of these sorts of amenities to be quite thoughtless on the part of management. Staff varies. Some quite attentive, but just as many or more are indifferent. Would not stay here again.

If possible, I'd give a rating of 3.5

The good: It is the historic past host of many a presidential inaugural ball, etc.; it's lobby is pretty ornate; it's garden in the back is beautiful and inviting; the gym and pool (although I didn't get to use) are good; the service is great; location is good - walking distance to the zoo and about 3 metro stops from downtown/ the national mall.

The bad: The place needs a significant retrofit. The place has only incandescent lights (this is a no-brainer for the environment and saving money on electric bills); the carpet looks about 30 years old; for the price, the rooms are nothing special.
