“Great Location, Great Rate”
Reviewed 25 December 2011

I frequently have business in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, and always stay at one of the nearby Kimpton Hotels. Madera is my favorite, but I usually stay where the room rate is lowest. On this trip I paid only $134/night at Madera. On a trip a few months earlier the lowest rate was at Kimpton Hotel Rouge at $204. I've also stayed at Kimpton's Topaz, and the Helix is nearby as well. It doesn't seem that any one of them is always cheapest, so check all 4 on the Kimpton site - all 4 are very nice, and inexpensive for DC. Before you book, be sure to first join the Kimpton In-Touch frequent guest program, and you will get free Internet in your room and a $10 free snack coupon for the room mini-bar. The hotels have a free wine hour each evening as well for all guests, and cookies and milk in the lobby after 10:30PM. Rooms are large and very well appointed, with in-room safe large enough for a laptop. Madera rooms have a separate sink/dressing room outside the bathroom, which not all other Kimptons have. My room this time faced the street (but was not noisey) and had a balcony I could walk out onto. The Madera also has an attached restaurant, as does the Rouge, but not the Topaz. The hotel staff is always very accomodating and friendly. The only downside to me is that they welcome pets at this hotel. While I realize pet owners need places to stay as well, riding the elevator with a large dog is somewhat disconcerting. There is a wheel-chair lift at the front desk for access to the room elevators. The Madera is a 5 minute walk from the Dupont Circle Metro Stop, south exit.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a balcony.

Just stayed for 3 nights (Fri, Sat, Sun) and had a fantastic time. Huge room with very comfortable bed, great location SUPER close to subway and Dupont Circle neighborhood (truly less than a 3 minute walk), friendly staff and additional perks like.... cocktail hour between 5 and 6 (red and white wine, local beer, spiked and regular hot apple cider), cookies and milk between 10pm and 2am, AND if you sign up for the free Kimpton In-Touch membership you get a $10 credit for the room mini-bar and free wi-fi!

We used the subway to travel around the city and because of this hotel's location, we were able to return throughout the day to relax and plan our next outing. It is also central enough AND safe enough that we walked down to the monuments after dark one night....what a delight!

Remember...sign up for the Kimpton In-Touch...it is totally worth it!

We had a fantastic weekend stay here. We were on a higher floor with a balcony and I loved the view of the neighborhood and the pretty building across the street. We got lucky with street parking nearby which was free for the weekend but I would be prepared to spend a fair amount to valet.

Highlights included:
- Very spacious room with comfy beds, a great writing desk, couch
- Pleasant front desk staff
- Coffee/tea in the morning and lemon water all day. Yum!
- Fun, animal print bathrobes!
- Great neighborhood within easy walking distance to Dupont Circle and fantastic restaurants

Cons:
- The only one really is that the bathtub and toilet are in a tiny room. This was not a big problem because there is a large sink area with plenty of counterspace but is definitely a surprise compared to the size of the rest of the room - I imagine this is a remnant from before the hotel was renovated.

Would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: upper floor with balcony

Dear 7sunset, thanks for a posting a review! Sounds like you had a great visit. Yes, most of the rooms are quite spacious, and yes most of the rooms do have the shower and toilet in the smaller bathroom. This does make it a little "cozy" in the bathroom. But with the sink/vanity being outside the bathroom area, it is still functional and spacious. Thanks again for your post, hoep to see you soon, Modi Ahmed: General Manager

The service was great, along with the lemon water and other treats at the front desk area. The room was nice with a comfy bed. If you like animal prints, you'll love this place!

The hotel itself is a little different. It's tucked into a quiet area with not a lot of eating places around it. Mass transit is nearby but I needed someone at the front desk to point me in the right direction to get there. There are steps up to the elevator. Not a problem but I hate asking for help or accepting it when it's offered - so I lugged the suitcase up the stairs myself. (The alternative was to let the girl behind the front desk lug it up there.) I'm not sure what they would do if they had a client in a wheelchair.

There's no fitness room, and even though they offered to let me workout nearby, I didn't want to go walking around that area at 5:30 am when it was dark. It's not a bad area, but my friends who live in DC told me not to go running by myself when it was dark out.

I like to be in the middle of everything with the bustling city surrounding me. So next time I'll stay at the Dupont Circle Hotel. (I've also done a review of this hotel.)

Dear cdp7227, thank you so much for your review. Of course all feedback is appreciated to help us better the experience for everyone. Our location is only 2 blocks from Dupont Circle, so you get the best of the neighborhood, close location to the restaurants and Metro, but tucked away slightly for a more homey feel. True, we do not have a fitness center within the building and do have an agreement with an outside facilty. Although the neighborhood is very safe, we can offer you a taxi to take you over to the facility. Thank you again for your feedback! Sincerely, Modi Ahmed General Manager

I've stayed at the Hotel Madera four or five times, I think. I keep coming back because it's a great place. The location couldn't be more convenient to the Metro and the hotel is within walking distance of the sights and sounds of Dupont Circle--plenty of great places to eat, drink, shop, and play tourist.
The staff is very friendly and helpful--I've asked plenty of questions about the area and they are always right on the money with their answers.
The rooms are stylish (very Kimpton, lots of animal prints), large, and quiet.
I'm sold on the place and looking forward to returning.

Room Tip: I ask for an upper floor, away from the elevator. You can ask for a street view, but I don't thi...

This hotel is very clean, the staff are very friendly. We took our pets here and they were very welcome. Walking distance to all the places you want to see in Washington plus close to good restaurants. The rooms were also larger than normal. The only draw back is parking on the street
