“Comfort away from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2012

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Edgewater in February 2010 for valentine's day weekend. I thought it would be crowded, but it wasn't at all. Upon arriving, the owner was very nice and greeted us kindly. She showed us to our room and explained to the different types of amenities and how to enter the building after hours. It's not your typical hotel I guess, this place is privately owned and the building entrance and hallway seem like apartments, until you enter your room and it seems like a standard hotel room. It's very updated with current furniture, flat screen tv. There is a fountain outside the window that shuts off upon request to owner. In the morning, there are danishes, juice and coffee in the communal kitchen for everyone to share. I booked this hotel because it was one of the inexpensive yet nice hotels in the area. I would stay here again and maybe splurge a lil more and stay in an oceanfront suite. The rooms are beautiful and the location is right on the main street facing the ocean.

Beautiful beachfront rooms within walking distance from everything. Pier, beach, restaurants and stores right down a flight of stairs. Stayed overnight in the spacious Ocean View Suite #1 and the view from the inside sitting porch can't be beat! My toddler had so much fun running around the well-maintained room and reaching for the thoughtful Easter candy strategically placed all over the room. Suite also had its own mini-fridge to keep his milk and food but even if it didn't, there was a large fridge and microwave in the kitchen just outside the room.

The owner Barbara was such a laid back, accommodating and caring host. Her caretaker Esperanza was likewise a delight, she is not the best English speaker but she can understand our needs, was very helpful and nice.

My husband felt staying at this hotel was like staying at someone's home. Definitely coming back to Edgewater!

It all started with the Catalina flyer out of Newport Beach, ca. (great group of professionals), The Edgewater Hotel had reserved our charter reservations. Welcomed by owner of family owned establishment with arrival to Island, what a perfect hotel location. We felt so cozy-welcomed and situated in the heart of beautiful Catalina Island.

We were amazed with the comforts of home in the community kitchen at hotel, with continental breakfast amenities. Local store very close, marvelous restaurants, great shops all in a close walking range. Bike, hike, use of golf carts - when in Avalon I feel at peace, surreal with an exceptional small town glamour and big ocean surroundings.

Rooms are so comfortable, beautifully decorated and the young traveler we had loved the custom tiles which the island is noted for. When in Catalina a must is to stay at a mom and pop place to truly embrace the quality of small business pride in ownership.

Everyone needs to step into the Pacific Ocean, just outside the hotel - wow what a breathtaking view.

Enjoy the locals, stop and smell the local community love of the Island. We will be back soon, as we came for Spring Break. All employees of establishment were welcoming, cordial and went above and beyond the call of professional expectations.

Barbara and Brittani thanks for the adventure of a life time.

Room Tip: front suites. Although all rooms have access to community kitchen, star gazing rooftop with the bes...

The owner of Edgewater is very personable and "allowed' us to stay one night instead of two over the weekend. The heating system had no clear instructions on how to use it so we were a bit cold for the first two hours. We did call the emergencey number and when Esperanze came by, she didnt know how to use the controls either. I finally Googled the unit and was able to figure out the system and turn on the heat. There are no views unless you like looking into the next room. The fountain, i guess it is suppose to relax you, is in between the rooms on a roof and no way to turn it off. I thought it was quite annoying. The shower went cold in the morning right in the middle of the hair shampooing, ugh! Barbara, the owner, told us later that it was the plumbers fault! Huh? My friend found the hot water heater and the circuit was tripped, Barbara says it happens quite a bit.........maybe you should get it fixed?
Coffee and bagels for breakfast...wifi...ok, you have that but for the price we paid for a cold room, cold shower and no view doesnt warrant a return stay. We were on Catalina Island scouting hotels for a large group we are bringing back in September, we would be staying at The Edgewater. Not sure how it ranked sixth out of the other hotels...........

We are very sorry to hear that your stay was less than enjoyable at The Edgewater. As you can see from our many positive reviews, we have guests who thoroughly enjoy their stay with us. The in-room AC/Heating unit is a more modern amenity and all units have always operated in a timely and efficient manner. We apologize that the Hot Water Heater malfunctioned and do acknowledge that we responded immediately to fix the problem. We thank you for your feed back and regret that your stay wasn't to your liking.

It's like a boutique hotel or upgraded B&B. It's a small hotel, but the place is Clean, beds are VERY comfortable, can not beat the location, and best sleep I've had in ages. Maybe it was the slow pace of Avalon this weekend, but I did enjoy everything about this trip. They are one of the very few that don't do that goofy 2 night minimum stay. We didn't stay in either of the 2 suites, but I would recommend them as they have a view that can't be beat. The rooms we had didn't have views, but they worked very well for us. Service? Impeccable!
