“Allenspark Lodge”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2011

My husband and I stayed the night over Labor Day Weekend. We were kind of hesitant as soon as we pulled up to the lodge as it is right off the road and was very decieving from the pics we saw on the internet. In any event, when we walked in the door, we were relieved. The owner and his wife were very nice. Our room was just what we expected but the mattress was worn out and when we laid in the bed, hubby's side of the bed went completely down and I had to sleep like I was on a hill. We were in room #15 (The gunpowder room). We were disappointed that they didn't offer any amenties such as (shampoo, conditioner or lotion) for showering. When we used the bathroom on the second floor there was a basket in the bathroom but it was filled with half used and empty bottles. This is the first time we stayed at a B&B that different offer these much needed products for showering. Other than that, the breakfast was delicious and our stay was nice but it was definitely a drive from RMNP and we really had wished we had booked somewhere closer. Another important note is that the town of Allenspark is very small! You will have to drive 20 miles to find someplace to eat. We spent the majority of our 2 day trip, driving to and from Estes Park and Lions to get food.

I'm Bill Martin, and my wife Juanita and I own the Allenspark Lodge.

The pictures of the lodge on our website no longer show the neighbor's cabins. Folks would call us trying to book the cabins they saw on our website. I figured the folks next door might not want to share, so I never booked their cabins for our guests' use. We did kinda get tired of telling people "no", so we cropped the picture on our website. Sorry if it's misleading. We are in the center of Allenspark, and around 200 people live year round in the ten square miles around us. The metro area is getting out of hand.

Most of the rooms have only a full sized mattress. When the lodge was built in the 1930's, a full mattress was considered plenty big, and the rooms were built accordingly. The weight of the average American is up 25 pounds since then, and most sleep in queen or king beds now. If we put queen mattresses in, you would have to climb across the bed to get to the other side of the room. It's better if you just like the person you vacation with here.

We are located in Boulder County, Colorado. If we were to offer the little, disposable, non-recyclable shampoo and conditioners, the peasants would storm the Bastille with pitch-forks and torches. We leave "industrial sized" shampoo and conditioners in the showers and by the tubs. I put them there 'cause that's where I would use them.

There are only three places to eat here in town, outside of us. A coffee shop that does soups and sandwiches in the evenings, a cafe that cooks breakfast and lunch, and a fine dining establishment (The Fawn Brook Inn, plan on two and a half hours for you meal). If none of those suit you, it is a 13 mile drive to Estes Park or an 18 mile drive to Lyons, where there are a number of very good restaurants. It is a beautiful drive either way, but watch out for the elk. They think they own the place.

My wife and I were directed to this bed and breakfast that has been around since the 1930s, by a guided hiking trip through Rocky Mountain National Park. We were greeted at the door by the owners and their dog, given warm freshly baked cookies, given a tour of the establishment that made us feel more like out of town family then guests, enjoyed the hot tub, and watched a movie in their front room. This place is fun and I suggest anyone looking for lodging in the area to consider staying here.

There were 4 of us in our group and we stayed in the apartment which allowed us to make our own dinners and hang out together in "our space". Bill and Juanita are super hosts and the breakfasts are "to die for" - they last you until mid-afternoon easily even while hiking. Our space was roomy - had a kitchen, small eating area, a full bathroom and a bedroom that slept 4 with a balcony off of that. It is a bit rustic, but that's what we wanted. The downstairs area boasts the actual living area of our hosts with a gorgeous main room, a family room with over 500 movies to choose from, a common area where groups can meet with some capability of cooking, the dining area where breakfast is served and a small bar to enjoy a glass of wine or beer at the end of the day. There is always coffee, tea or hot chocolate available with yummy chocolate chip cookies. Guests eat together at a prescribed time at breakfast and the stories told are quite amusing and fun. We highly recommend this as a great place to stay - especially if planning to horseback ride or hike in the area. Be aware there is no TV reception and cell phones don't work here - ah, a bit of heaven away from this crazy world!

We had only a one night stay but we wish we could have stayed longer. Bill and Juanita were extremely accommodating. The breakfast was wonderful and the other guests were great. We loved our Teddy Bear room and would come back again in a heartbeat.

From the warm greeting when we arrived, to the comfy quilt-covered beds, to the cozy sitting areas in the Great Room and Owl Cove, to the sumptuous breakfast (at which Bill and Juanita joined us and explained the delicacies of the day), to the great conversation with them and the other guests, to the tips for enjoying Rocky Mountain National Park and restaurants in and around Estes Park, to the book shelves, daily newspapers, games, puzzles, and last but definitely not least, Sophie the perfect dog -- our long weekend was just super. We'll be back!

Owner and her grandson were very nice people. If you are looking for a Westin or Hilton this place isn't for you. Rooms are fairly small and we had a very small bathroom in our room. Most rooms don't. Not complaining because we enjoyed our stay there but just stating the facts.

We have stayed at the Allenspark Lodge many times, and come back every year. The owners are friendly and helpful. The lodge is a thing of beauty - they don't build 'em like this anymore! We love it that the lodge is in a quiet area (NOT the tourist craziness of Estes Park, though you can get there in 15 minutes) and is rustic and comfortable. It's our style, which is clean, comfortable and not fancy. The breakfast is amazing! So much food and all homemade! You can't believe the variety of great food you get in the morning.
