Hurricane Richard hit dead center on Caye Caulker while we where there. Many tourists felt very uneasy about their safety - not us. It turns out that the Island Oasis Resort was "over constructed" with extra concrete and reinforced steel. When the storm approached, dozens of locals left their homes and other hotels and tried to book a room at Island Oasis during the storm! The American owner Island Oasis had to politely turn down dozens of other shelter-seekers after his rooms were all booked.
Free wireless internet. Free bicycles (turns out all the other hotels charged extra to rent bikes while on the island). Safe and Private - the owner built a now famous 10 foot high bamboo fence surrounding his large property so that all guests can enjoy privacy and safety while on his grounds. GREAT location - easy 1 minute bike ride to anywhere on the island, a short walk to ocean and the island's only nature trail system; and, the owner met us at the airport and personally put our luggage on his golf cart and drove us to Island Oasis where he had drinks and fresh towels waiting for us. We had a blast.
