Fantastic experience! Photos really don’t do it justice, so if you are in the area it’s a ‘must do’! Guides were excellent, equipment like helmets and head torches were good quality and what you see and experience is something truly incredible.

This experience is hard to describe. We were told by Belizean's it is not to be missed and they were right. If you are planning a trip to Belize, be sure to plan for a mainland/jungle stay and go to ATM. It's a phenomenal history lesson, hike through the past. Be sure to bring socks! Yes, socks even though you will be crossing creeks and swimming in them when you are in the cave. There are places where shoes are not allowed due to preservation requirements. Hiking shoes are not required, but good water/walking shoes are strongly advised. This is a several hour excursion. You don't need to be super fit, but you need to be comfortable in the water, small spaces, the dark, and modest hikes/walking.

Do not let mild anxiety of any of the above deter you from ATM. It is a once in a lifetime experience - or it was for us.

My husband and I experienced ATM with Emil from Bird Trekking Tours as our awesome leader. Our group was small— only 7 of us, so we were all able to get the full experience and take advantage of Emil’s 17 years of experience. I wore my Zella 3/4 length wet/dry pants that were gathered at the bottom along with a Zella sports bra, cheap lightweight tank top, and my Brooks trail running shoes. All of this was perfect and allowed me to have excellent footing on the rocks and stretch for the tight spots. We were so enthralled with the cave itself, and then the dry room containing the 1000-year-old offerings, that I forgot to be fatigued even the slightest bit. It was all so incredible and Emil was there for every bit of the experience. Wow. Just wow. I highly recommend ATM.
We stayed just outside of San Ignacio so the drive to the cave was only about an hour and a half. This was nice as we didn’t have a long way to get back so we could enjoy a nice, well-deserved rum on our porch. Cheers!

If you have been in caves before this is not necessarily the biggest cave you’ll ever see or one with the best limestone formations. BUT it is definitely one of the best caving experiences I have ever had, as you not only have the fun of swimming, climbing and squeezing through the cave, you also see some great limestone formations and most of all the astounding amount of Mayan artefacts left as they have been found. It is not the cheapest activity but it was well worth it.
Suggestions:
Get some or borrow some water shoes
Wear tighter clothing- you can’t just wear a bikini etc, so you’ll be swimming in the clothes and it is a bit cold so the less baggy dripping material the better.
There is a 30min walk to the cave- good to be hydrated but don’t hydrate too well. You can’t pee in the cave so you’ll be holding onto a bursting bladder by the time you get all the way out again if you have chugged too much liquid beforehand!
Biting insects- I got quite a lot of very itchy bites, (not mosquitos, sandflies I think) they were mostly at the cave entrance I think, so take some spray or don’t stand round for too long in one spot :)
