“a jungle oasis”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2012

Hickatee review
March 1-3, 2012. An oasis of jungle beauty and peace. Wonderful morning coffee on the deck. Ian so graciously lent me his computer to email home. The rooms were so clean and had such lovely wood throughout. The named plants and backyard jungle walkways and garden greenhouses added to the appeal. The tours were so personal, individual. Cyrila's chocolate my favourite (tour) experience in all Belize. Juan's understanding of Maya sustainable farming practices and advocacy work comes a breath of fresh air, so true to our understanding and organic practices, yet deeper and more profound with his ancient Maya connection. I also loved the slow long ride through the jungle and country side out to Rio Blanco National Park. The Maya homes are immaculate and the country so untouched by modern life. It felt a tremendous priveledge to view this piece of Belize. We had the ruins of Lubaantun to ourselves.
The road out of Punta Gorda to Hickatee never seemed so long as when we did not know where we were heading, so be sure to have Ian or Kate guide you there. I can not really recommend eating in Punta Gorda as I was eaten by sand fleas at one spot and we seemed an inconvienience at another. Market days were the best face on an otherwise indifferent Punta Gorda poplace.
I truly felt like I was pampered ,as if on an African safari, by friendly knowlegeable British hosts who knew how to cook (yum) as well as direct us in to local activities. Thank you so much for your hospitality.

I couldn't have asked for a more peaceful, fun and relaxing experience. Ian and Kate are such wonderful people we were afraid of becoming the "pestering couple" but they are truly a joy to be around. Ian's passion for bugs and plants is infectious. Sitting on the porch drinking Ian's rum punch and listening to bats pass by on some ultrasound gizmo will be with me until the day I die. Follow that with Kate's fantastic cooking and you will not want to leave. Let me put it this way. My wife and I stayed at Hickatee one night and the following day we were going to stay at an all inclusive "Tree Lodge" for the next four nights. Once we arrived at the lodge it did not take us long to realize our mistake. We arranged the first possible trip back to Hickatee throwing 4 nights,16 meals and 2 tours of our money away on the lodge and we couldn't have been happier with our decision. Hickatee's prices are extremely fair from the cottages to the drinks and meals. Ian and Kate have a wealth of local knowledge and they really take care of their guest educating you on what to expect to pay for cabs, tours, tips and such. You are on your own for lunch and plan on entertaining yourself between 12-5pm or so. Don't miss Wed. night drumming with Ray, the butterfly farm, the on-site nature trails, Asha's for dinner, Kate's cooking and of course make Ian get out the bat gizmo. When we were leaving in the airport and I see my wife give Ian a hug goodbye and us realizing that we were truly going to miss those two, that speaks volumes. Ask yourself, when is the last time you felt like that going home from vacation? Thank you Ian and Kate.

Room Tip: Rooms very clean, light and airy.

Everyone else has covered the service from Ian and Kate and the howler monkeys, so let me focus on some other tips for your stay -
* Be very clear on what you want to do and get your "most important" trips scheduled. Ian and Kate have connections with great guides - Bruno (hiking), Dan (water), George (birds), Eladio Pops (cacao). They are fantastic but they book up and they also travel. We were lucky enough to get all 4
* Breakfast is good but it is the same every day. It's a small place but a breakfast rotation would be nice.
* Dinners are good and local - but a bit bland and heavy on starch
* If possible get the den and not the duplex - we had both - better water pressure and no adjacent neighbors made the den the better choice
* Get Miss Flo's phone number (the taxi that Ian and Kate usually use). Taxis are hard to find at night. The 1.5 mile walk back late at night is not hard - just very dark so make sure that you take a good flash light
* They close from roughly 1:30 - 5PM, unless they have arrivals, so make sure that you have filled up your water bottles before they close
* We met some great travelers during our one week stay there. It is fun to debrief over a Belikan or Ian's punch and exchange notes

We stayed 4 nights at Hickatee Cottages at the end of February 2012. It is a fabulous escape from a "typical" vacation and the normal crowds. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite - the owners' (Kate & Ian) former house. It has a very large bathroom, huge living room and nice bedroom. Impeccably clean. All the cottages are set in a lush, exotic jungle with massive cohune palms. Hickatee is 2 miles from PG town on a very rutted dirt/rock road. $20 Belize ($10 US) for a ride to or from town - it is "out there" but close to town. Ask for Flo the cab driver! Hickatee is somewhat off-grid - power is partly solar; there is no TV and the internet service works only occasionally. Ian and Kate take care of all your questions and needs - experts on the sights, flora, and fauna. A special destination for birders! Ian can usually pick you up and drop you at the airport. Great local food in PG town at Asha's, Marian's, and Earth Runnings. Stay Wed. night for the free drumming. Mayan ruins at Lubantuun are peaceful and impressive; the butterfly farm is well worth a visit. We want to return! Thanks Ian and Kate.

Unfortunately we only had two days at Hickatee! We arrived by ferry from Guatemala and were picked up by Marcia one of Ians very friendly workers! Ian and Kate oraganised everything for us they were most helpful and enthusiatic! We arrived early as we were heading off with Bruno on a trip to a cocoa farm. Our bungalow was not vacant because we were so early and without any charges Ian upgraded us to the Honeymoon suit which was vacant...it was beautiful! It had a huge shower room, toilet, sitting room area and big bedroom all very tastefully decorated. The grounds were immaculate and we were greeted very soon after our arrival by a howler monkey sitting in a tree outside our bungalow.Free drumming lessons with Rae!!Don't miss Kates cooking either!Ian has a wealth of knowlege about everything local and lots of books that you can browse!Perfect idylic, so sorry we could not spend longer!!

If you pass through PG or stay awhile, this is a must-stay place. Peaceful, plenty of space, nice grounds, food was great, room was immaculate. They picked us up and dropped us off, it doesn't get any easier. Easy to get to town and back, taxi is cheap. Sandy I I really enjoyed our stay, I'm just bummed we did not pass through PG on our way back to Belize City. I was hoping to stay another couple nights there. Next time for sure.....

We stayed at Hickatee for four nights in January and were very pleased. The grounds are beautiful, the cottage was immaculate and spacious. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating.

Kate is a wonderful cook, we only went into PG one night for dinner as her meals were superior to what we found in town. Ian is a font of information regarding the local wildlife as well as what to do in the area. We only went on one organized adventure because we found so much to explore and do around the cottages itself. Just grab a bike and explore.
