Our shore excursion was cancelled (don't want to go into too much detail because we didn't book through cruise line) but we ended up at the Hibiscus restaurant with a local and another couple. Had a fantastic time. Our guide ended up helping to prepare the meal of freshly made tortillas, nachos, fish etc. Amazing food. Fantastic atmosphere and the little museum next door to restaurant is a must-see. The owners/head chef's daughter Sophia kept us company with her incredibly cute smile. BEST restaurant to visit hands-down. We were 4 people and our entire bill (and we ate a lot) ended up being $48. Including drinks.

We stopped at the Hibiscus on our return to Santo Tomas from the Quirigua ruins. It has a nice little cultural museum attached and is co-located with a plantation/botanical garden. The prices seemed reasonable and the facility was clean and well organized. The staff was very courteous. This establishment can accommodate handicapped folks.

If you are looking for an excursion a short distance outside Santo Tomas this is the place.

It's a unique experience, the place is amazing!!! It's like having a great meal surrounded by pieces of beautiful art from the Mayan culture. Excellent service, and the food is delicious. My favorite stop on my way either, to guatemala city from the Atlantic coast, or vice versa. Definitely a place to visit!!!

We picked this place from a list on a cruise ship and had a great time. It was the spirit of the people there rather than what they offered that made the biggest impact with me. They have built this place seemingly from nothing and created a place that is interesting and even thought provoking, as long as you're not the type who demands to be entertained without thought. The food was good - try the Gallo beer.
