Perfect location to go snorkeling or diving right from the villa, and, as well, very quiet and relaxing. The villa is spacious, with a very comfortable living room and with a beautiful fully equipped kitchen. The large screen porch is a superb living area as well. Cheri and Derick are the bests hosts, very friendly, warm and attentive to their client’s needs. We will visit again!
My family of 4 are budget travelers but the Dolphin House and Utila seemed more like an undiscovered treasure than a cheap vacation. No hotel chains or large resorts, simple island businesses and easy living. The owners/managers Derrick and Cheri met us at the ferry, stocked our kitchen and took us in their boat to the West side of the island and the Dolphin House. The house is new construction so everything is modern, beautifully furnished and comfortable (AC + Screen porch). As with all vacations there were hiccups – the power can go out unexpectedly, boat only access takes getting use to and local businesses prefer Lempiras over US currency or credit cards.
Derrick and Cheri were very informative and arranged all local adventures which was super convenient. The nearby (within walking distance) restaurant, Neptunes, has great drink specials and good food with decent snorkeling when windy. You can take Neptunes’ boat to and from town at no charge if you buy a drink or a meal otherwise about $2.50 per person.
Derrick arranged a great offshore fishing adventure for my son and I, did I mention we are budget travelers. The boat was a local dory fishing boat no fancy fishing rigs here. We hand lined and trolled with one of Derrick’s rods and caught tuna, barracuda and jack fish. Best offshore trip I have had in years. We had fresh tuna the entire stay and all for $100. You can also fish the lagoons behind the house along the edges – caught my first tarpon there!!
Staying at the Dolphin House or on the west end, you have the daily option of experiencing a local adventure or just chillin at the house and reef right in front. The snorkeling is good but Utila seems to be more of a dive destination but don’t let that stop you. Unfortunately for us Budget travelers, the amount of new construction concerning vacation homes seems to be on the rise. I guess eventually secrets get revealed and development follows. If you go to Utila plan on staying at least a week, bring bug spray or baby oil, plenty of Lempiras, flip flops, a hat and an appreciation of undeveloped island living.
Thanks Derrick and Cheri loved your house and hospitality. I would only suggest putting a curtain on the kitchen window (a little too neighborly) and try your best to run off the developers. Hope to be back soon. The Reynolds of Austin, Texas
Adorable cottage on a beautiful location. Excellent restaurants located within close proximity. Beautiful ocean views, excellent diving and fishing. This is the best vacation ever. You cannot ask for better accommodations and service. I will definitely return for another vacation.
