Owner description: Nestled in an area with coconut trees and a black sand beach, this park is one of the best in Hawaii.

If you can time your visit to avoid the tour buses that frequently stop here, this is one of the best beaches on the island! The coarse-grained black sand is beautiful, but the surf is a little rough for swimming (and cooler than elsewhere on the island).

The campground is rather exposed, with little-to-no tree cover, and mediocre facilities.

But the turtles! Eye... sea turtles! You often see turtles lazing on the beach sunning themselves. And if you're lucky - and have the time to just sit on the beach for a while - you may just get to see a turtle crash up on the beach as the waves surge in. Sit tight for the next 15-30 minutes and watch the turtle slooooooowwwwwwly crawl his/her way up the beach. Very cool.

The ocean is beautiful at Punaluu, although it can be windy. There are ramadas for picnics, a bathroom, and plenty of parking. A little stand sells tshirts and snacks. But, the best part about this beach is the turtles! Lots of turtles, who fortunately have gotten used to the lots of tourists. (I saw six turtles on this trip.) The ocean floor is a little bit hard on your feet, due to the black sand (think crunched up lava), but people do get in the water and enjoy the ocean.

If you're in to scenery this beach is a must. Didn't see any turtles...a little disappointed. But the waves were huge making for some really stunning pictures.

Yes, this is a beautiful black sand beach, and yes, there are sea turtles here, very cool. However, during our brief visit, a few tourist buses emptied their customers who promptly swarmed the two or three turtles, petting them and posing their kids next to/on them next to the signs that clearly say give the turtles some space.

Try seeing a sea turtle or two while swimming while snorkeling and skip this spot. You will remember that much more than Punaluu Beach

We love this black sand beach! We saw 4 sea turtles that had come to shore to lay their eggs. It is beautiful and has a nice picnic area. The sand is dark black and easy to get to! This was one of our favorite beaches!
