It is a cliché to describe a place as an oasis, but is appropriate for Le Jardin des Biehn. From the moment you step out of the medina lane and through the big doors of the hotel, you are in a soothing dream world, with just the sounds of burbling water and songbirds, and the fragrances of oranges and flowers. A gorgeous place to come back to and recharge after a day in the bustling medinas of Fes. Or you might be tempted as we were one day just to stay inside the hotel walls, as it is a very special place unto itself, including the good hotel restaurant Café Fez.

Mr. Biehn is an antique dealer, but he also has a flair for fantasy decor, as each room is a play-set with a different theme. We chose L'Africain, a very spacious and beautiful group of rooms with 2 terraces. The sun streamed through the blue stain glass windows in such a lovely way.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the kindness and helpfulness of the manager, Mr. Alami Houcine and Taha (hope I got that right) who both helped us with some outside problems and arrangements.

The only negative of this hotel is deciding which room to book, as all are different, and we found several quite appealing!

We had dinner in this beautifully restored Rhyad and it was perfect. The place is gorgeously designed: from table cloths to lanterns, you step into a fairy tale!
The food was carefully thought for simple moroccan taste, no frills, but incredibly tasty!
Don’t even try and find it yourself though: when you reserve tell them to send you someone to walk you there from your hotel...the restaursnt is tucked away into the Medina and you can seriously get lost!

Over several visits to Fes, i found this to be the most specious Riad in the medina. Beautiful lush gardens, lots of sitting area around in public spaces. My room itself is a bit small and dark but overall i found the place quite charming. I am here during music festival so busy time for town. Would have wished to stay in one of the suites, which i am told is magical. Perhaps next time.

I am not sure if the woman who was working in the hammam just wanted to get home as it is Ramadan. It was a little like going through a car wash. There was no steam in the hammam, she used a scrubber that was used and used the same on both of us. Seemed very rushed and not at all relaxing. The table is not long enough so it digs into your ankles when you are laying on your stomach during the scrub. Also the mat to lay your head on is a rolled up yoga mat that does not appear clean. We may have been spoiled by a previous hammam that was amazing and less expensive. There are definitely better hammam experiences out there.
As far as the cafe, you can get a glass of wine to recover from the experience.

We stayed at the Riad for 4 nights in early April. The riad is a quieter part of the medina, and is lovely if quirky. We had the pasha suite which was huge and could easily accommodate 4 adults. There are several lovely riads in Fez, but what I found exceptional was the service. The staff including the manager (Hussein), the porters, the cafe servers were all extremely helpful and gracious. Our 8-year old daughter was warmly welcomed ( and not just tolerated as kids sometimes are at other hotels). The breakfast , served under the shade of trees in the garden, was very good. The only wrinkle was that the guide recommended to us by the riad was very focused on taking us to shops rather than sightseeing. We ventured out in the medina on our own the third day and made out fine. All in all, it was an excellent stay and I would stay there again.
