Arrived in Fes, the cultural capital of morocco. As with most rIads, the riad de cle de fes, was located in a nondescript alleyway.

As with most riads, the exterior is humdrum so as to fit in with the neighbourhood, and to not show equality regardless of wealth.

The central courtyard was impressive and the staff were welcoming. The room on the other hand, was a tad underwhelming. Friend's room was large, but the bathroom was up a flight of stairs, whićh was strange, but the bathroom was a good size - see pictures.

My bedroom had a separate living room and bedroom - see pictures. The bathroom was tiny and did not have a shelf for toiletries in the shower stall. The remote control for the living room air con could not be found, and even asking from the reception did not yield results.

There seems to be a disconnect in the way the star rating is perceived in asia and here. This riad is at most a 3 to 3.5 star property. It is a pity as it could very easily be a 4 star and above - all that is required is some renovations - the property is a little run down. Understand that riads are old and have their charm - quaint and personal as compared to impersonal hotel chain rooms - but there needs to be certain standards too. Really a missed opportunity to make the riad so much better.

The wifi is very weak, some investment should be made here - the internet connectivity is a must in this day and age, it is inexcusable not to have decent wifi.

Also, would skip the massage - reasonably priced but not a good massage - especially if you like very firm massages.

That being said, the service and friendliness of the staff - specifically, Iman, Mariam and Ziane - made up for the rooms - which is why the rating is a 4 from me.

This is a lovely place to stay in Fez Medina. You really feel you part of Moroccan culture.
The staff are very friendly and professional and had no trouble understanding an Aussie.
There is a small pool which is great for cooling off after a summer's day of sight seeing.
The meals were authentic Moroccan and very tasty and filling.

What a wonderful place. Really authentic Moroccan style, beautiful rooms and inside courtyard. Very friendly staff can organise transfers from train or airport and book day trips for you. But if you plan to go to Meknes, don’t go on a Friday!

There are so many Riads to choose from in Fes it can be overwhelming. Our decision was made on the location of the Cle de Fes. It is on the edge of the medina, less than a 15 minute walk to the blue gate, where there are lots of restaurants. Not a problem at night as the alley from the hotel is well lit, there are other Riads nearby, and then you are on main roads with lots of activity.
The rooms are large and beautifully restored. A very calm place to return to after a busy day. Staff are exceptionally attentive to anything you might like...tea, cookies, olives! Having a glass of wine on the terrace as the sun was setting over the medina was perfect. Our only disappointment was the dinner we had booked for our first night, it became quite comical as the chicken was extremely "tough".

Just had one night travelling from Chauoeuen to Fez en route to Casablanca. Building was amazing and room had spacious area, enjoying the stay very much. Had dinner light there - chicken tajine. Due to early departure was not able to have breakfast that was pity, Would recommend everyone who want to relax in the hustle city.
