This was our 4th or 5th night in Morocco and we had had some very good Moroccan meals but we were getting to a point where we really wanted some plain European food with some well maintained wine. Le Karawan fitted the bill perfectly (although we could have had Moroccan food if we wanted) and was delicious. Our only complaint was that it was, we felt, unnecessarily expensive.

We dined here for dinner on our first night in Fez. First the good things. Our Riad escorted us to the restaurant and, in turn, because we asked, the restaurant walked us back to our Riad. All very civilized. Our Riad also rang ahead and booked a table for us. We arrived on time and the staff acted like stunned rabbits....they seemed not to know we were coming. And, they remained on the back foot all the whole we were there.

We were not offered a menu. We were not asked about dietary requirements - except if we preferred chicken or beef. The food just started coming out of the kitchen.

The beef tagine was too fatty. My companion left most of his meal and we shared mine.

When it came to paying the bill, at first they tried to only accept credit card with a passport' later, that changed to credit card and no identification needed.

A very disappointing and incredibly expensive, non-event evening.

Cannot recommend.

Morocco is known for its attention to detail in culinary arts, as gastronomy is a traditional part of the culture. In Fez, fine dining can be found at Karawan Restaurant, an authentic Moroccan restaurant located in the Karawan Riad. Chef Outhmane prepares a variety of gourmet food for the discerning diner, elegantly combining Moroccan and Mediterranean flavors.

I had the pleasure of dining at Karawan one evening for dinner, and I was pleased with the level of service, the quality and freshness of the food, and the elegance of the restaurant’s setting. The wait staff was very attentive, and each course was promptly delivered to my table. The atmosphere was relaxed yet inviting, with modern details that enhance the aura of luxury.

I started with amuse bouche of escargot. It was light and buttery, a delicious texture and perfectly cooked. Next I tried a tart of chicken, aubergine and cheese, which was baked until lightly crisped and the chicken browned. The combination of the ripe aubergine with the chicken gave the dish a hearty complexity that was satisfying and comforting.

For my main dish, I had fresh trout, with broccoli, red pepper and seasoned mashed potatoes. The fish was excellent, and the produce fresh. The mashed potatoes were creamy and fluffy and had the right amount of seasoning.

For dessert, I enjoyed lemon cream with a freshly made raspberry sauce. Not too sweet but just a beautiful blend of tart and subtle sweetness. A delicious way to end a wonderful meal.

Everything about the Karawan Restaurant is highly recommended. Whether you’re staying at the riad, or just looking for an upscale yet relaxing dining experience, Karawan is the way to go. The restaurant incorporates the finest parts of Moroccan cuisine, and blends with the rich culture of the world’s oldest medina in Fez.

We had the 340 MAD european menu which was amazing and a great change from all the tagines. We booked in advance as in low season they are not open all the time but we were staying in the Karawan Riad so it was a real treat just to pop down to eat in the wonderful settings. Definitely ask to go on a little tour of the riad if you get a chance. The rooms are wonderful and the sitting areas so pretty and beautifully decorated. There wasn't much choice on the menu it was either steak or fish for the main everything else was set. It was wonderful though, the starter was a great tarte. The mains was very tasty steak fantastically cooked so it was rare. The pudding was a delicious fruity cream and biscuit pudding. The service was discrete and efficient. If anything the service was a little too fast. We ate pretty quickly and it would have been slightly better to have a little more time between courses.
