As we turned into the Medina, the alley way narrowed. To our right, there wasa little sign (unlit) that said “Restaurant Ya Hala”. The door was shut...and we thought damn, it’s closed.
We lifted the Fatimah’s Hand and knocked on the door....behold, the door opened with a genuine welcoming Moroccan smile. Maharbah, he greeted!
As we entered, we realised the family had converted their guest hall into a cozy dinning room. Nothing fancy, just felt like being welcomed into a Moroccan humble abode.
We ordered the veal targine with prune and almonds; as well as the chicken couscous from their simple one pager menu. No fuss.
We were told that our food will be freshly prepared, and ready in 45mins time.
Time went pass quickly, as we sat and caught up with our friends on the social media.
Here comes the food! The veal was perfectly cooked, tender, savoury but not too sweat, layers of taste with hint of spices as it delicately unfolded. The couscous was light, and full of flavours of the farm. One could taste corn, pumpkin, zucchini, carrots, potatoes and fresh chicken.
As we sat silently and grazed on the food, we were so focused on it that we were not at all bothered by all the family children playing, crying...the women of the house sharing stories of their days etc in their other family living rooms.
We truely enjoyed the whole experience!

This was by far the best vegetarian tajine I ate during my trip in morocco. The Mama is the chef and she is the best! The waiter speaks english and is very lovely! Furthermore, you get mint tea for free.

We were in Meknes for a wedding and stayed in the old medina. We Stumbled upon this gem when looking for a place near our riad. It felt like we were visiting a family. You get free mint tea while waiting for the food. The means are cooked from scratch so be ready for the wait. The food is cooked by the owner's mother. He was very welcoming and really made us feel at home. We went back to take pastillas to go! You must go and ask for the chicken pastilla. The couscous and tagine are equally lovely.

Came with a group of friends and we had a fantastic time. Yes, service is "slow" by U.S. standards but personal and top notch in all other ways. Dishes are made to order and come to the table piping hot. It is a two person operation --appears to be mother and son. Wonderful, comfortable dining room.
