We would give Mandela's 4.5 if we could and this is due to the value for money but more importantly the host Vera. She is an incredible woman.
We arrived around sunset and to be honest weren't that jazzed about the area as we approached. Vera was not home when we arrived but we were shown to our room which was off the main part of the condo - in a granny flat (with its own entrance). The room was good size with lots of security bars, clean and a good shower. The decor seemed to be a hippy mix of Bali/Indian/African. We were out of Mets and really didn't know if we could walk around at night in the area.
There was a good common lounge where we met some fabulous other travellers - an Italian NGO worker living in Uganda and a stunning poet/singer from Swaziland. Vera arrived and she is as warm, fun and alive as the other reviewers have said. It's incredible how the energy of place can really be transformed by good people.
Vera was extremely helpful - organising a taxi for dinner to a tummy tapas restaurant Nossa Tasca and to the airport the next am. It's a real shame we didn't have longer to see Maputo and also to chat more to Vera as she is a really fun and fascinating lady. More
