The restaurant has a delightful courtyard for an outdoor dining experience that is very pleasant. Good service. Food is off a limited menu but the fish options are particularly good.

The Explorer serves fantastic Italian dishes - the carbonara is my favourite! The decor is based around the theme of 'explorer', with old pictures of 19th century explorers such as Speke, Grant and Burton etc, which makes it pretty unique. The service is great, and although its a little pricer than other Italian restaurants in Kampala, it's definitely worth a visit!

Great sourrounding with a nice setting. Feels like having dinner in the rainforest. Tables are set under a huge tree sourrounded with brickwalls and water. Super friendly staff who can recommend what goes with what. The food were made in heaven and I guess the chef dont miss out of anything. If you havent been there just go. If you stay at Serena Hotel in Kampala you cant miss out on this restaurant .

Thank Mari H

Nearly five years ago, I titled a review for Bwana Tembo: Best Italian Restaurant in Uganda. I might now need to go back and do a small edit as the food at Explorer Restaurant at Serena Hotel was superb from start to finish.

I have been trying to work out if it was a matter of not having had a really lovely meal for some time or whether it really was just incredible. My conclusion reads that it is the latter.

I had assorted cured meats with parmesan as starter. It was lovely. Only negative was that it was far too big a portion! Mains was grilled salmon with roasted potatoes and lemon butter sauce. Now grilled salmon can go wrong quite easily but it is was cooked to perfection and seasoning was spot on.

After starter and mains, I was ready to burst, however, the dessert menu managed to get my tastebuds to overpower the signals from my full stomach. So I went all in and ordered the chocolate dessert, number two on the dessert menu. It was a small portion but each bit concluded in a big smile. It was heaven.

My friend had smoked salmon for starter. It looked yummy and again the portion was way to big but who can complain about that. For mains, she had lamb chops with mint sauce. I did have a bit also and it was delicious. Perfectly medium-rare grilled as meat should be. For dessert, she went for the classic, tiramisu. Another dessert that made smile appear with every scoop.

All in all, it was an absolutely delight. It does not come cheap, for Uganda that is. For two people, we spent about 520.000 $150 in total including a bottle of red wine. We did go for the more expensive options throughout the meal though.

Also a big thumbs up to the staff. Properly trained. Attentive without being annyoing. Friendly and smiling. Lovely service.

Only small negative note. The frogs and crickets can be really loud. Somehow having high pitched frogs and crickets are not really creating the atmosphere for a lovely dinner, in my opinion since the restaurant is more or less in the centre of Kampala. Different story if it was in the middle of a swampy area in the countryside.

The menu was different at the explorer, so it was a nice change from the Lakes just for a little different food and ambiance.
