We enjoyed our 3 night stay in February 2012 at this very comfortable boutique hotel smack in the middle of Thamel. We loved all the decoration and curios around the hotel. The room was clean and the beds very comfortable, although slightly small for a double room. The only negative was that plumbing wasn’t great (toilets needed several flushes) – but there was plenty of hot water and good water pressure.

The staff were very friendly and happy to make suggestions for our plans for the day. Although the hotel also runs a travel agency on the premises, we appreciated that they did not push their services. The breakfast was delicious every morning.

The hotel is very nice, cozy and well-located in the center of Thamel. We had booked it from Italy and spent the first two nights there. After spending the next week on trips out of Kathmandu we realized that its comforts are really a luxury for Nepal standards. In fact, in Nepal it is difficult to have private bathroom, hot water, constant electricity, wi-fi and a heating system all working properly in the same hotel (they were all working properly at all times at the Ambassador). So we went back to the Ambassador on our last night in Nepal though it is more expensive than most Kathmandu accomodations (but not so expensive compared to European standards - we spent 60 euros with breakfast and wifi included). In addition, the hotel is very clean and smells very good (which is not at all granted in Nepal). Last but not least, the service is very good, with professional staff that is always available and really friendly: they make you feel almost home. I think this is what makes the major difference with the other hotel considered as golden standard by travellers in Thamel, the Kathmandu Guest House. In fact, we have tried KGH as well: although our judgement could be a little biased by the fact that we were in the mid-budget rooms, we got the impression that even if we had chosen the most expensive rooms, we would not have found the same relaxing experience as in the Ambassador. Overall, we would definitely recommend the Ambassador Garden Home!

Room Tip: The hotel has two types of rooms: Deluxe and Super Deluxe. We were in a Deluxe both times. I believe...

Very friendly. Right in the center of Thamel. Access by cars could be an issue. But I liked it more than another larger hotel nearby. Stayed twice here and will go back again.

Pros: Location was right in the middle of Thamel, good breakfast, very friendly staff, free water everyday

Cons: Noisy at night due to nightclub noise, noisy in the day due to construction work being carried out nearby, not enough english channels, water pressure in shower, wifi did not work all the time

A friend has recommended this hotel to me. It has a great location in the heart of Thamel. We enjoyed tea in the lounge area, there was lots of hot water and staff were friendly and helpful. Once we got there. We did have trouble making a reservation and a confirmation didn't come through until the last minute. If you have lots of time to make a booking I would recommend it with more than a "3 star" rating, but if you only have a few days to make a booking you may consider looking elsewhere.

The Ambassador Garden Home is an island of civility in the heart of Thamel. The foyer and garden restaurant were peaceful and comfortable. The coffee was good and hot, and the included breakfasts were ok also. Two computers were available for internet access. The staff was welcoming and efficient. The rooms were large and clean, and the beds were comfortable. The hotel accommodated 3 adults in one room by bringing in a comfortable portable bed. The hotel was happy to store our extra baggage during our trek, and we returned to find everything intact. It was a great place to stay, as one could walk the entire extent of Thamel from the hotel. I will use them again next time in Kathmandu.

Room Tip: choose a room at the end of the hall on the garden side to ensure space and quiet

I've been back to this hotel many times in the last 18months with my partner. It's good value for money, clean and consistent. It doesn't have the swimming pools or choice of restaurants like the Shanker or Radisson however you will not be doing much outdoor swimming in December and the location of Hotel means you have some of the best restaurants right on your door step. Do try Helena's for breakfast, Delice de France and Road House (many days we were here for lunch and dinner!) - all on the same street as the hotel.

The rooms are cosy and clean and hot water was always available when needed.Breakfast was served in the cosy back garden and you could have anything from the menu hot or cold.

For a budget stay in Kathmandu I would definitely recommend this hotel as a contender. The only down side are that the rooms can be a little dark, I think this is due to the special energy saving lighting, which is not great in the evening when trying to apply make up. ;o)

Room Tip: Rooms at the back (facing the garden) are quieter than rooms facing the street. If you make a reque...
