Vaisha Dev (Toothache Tree)
Reviewed May 14, 2013

We came across this small but interesting 'tree' whilst walking in the Thamel area and were fascinated by its story. Supposedly if you have toothache you nail a coin to the 'tree' and the gods will give you relief. Not sure how this works but I am sure others will use this in their attempts to relieve the pain. Still I said a little prayer whilst there and I didn't get toothache for the rest of our journey so perhaps there is some truth in it after all.

A must visit for the dentists... It's an old dental street with still many traditional tooth pullers. Stone god is a small rock with many nailed coin. the belief goes that if you have a toothache, you go there and nail a coin and your ache is gone... Maybe, your abscess will burst after all the vibration along with the placebo effect...

Touch the coins nailed into the tree and your toothache will disappear.

Vaisha Dev is not so much a tree but a lump, which is probably one of the oddest sights in the entire city. At first sight it is difficult to appreciate him for what he represents but for people who know what toothache means, this might be the only spot in the entire world where the ailing may pray to a god who is sympathetic to their pain. Beware, however, if he whispers into your ear that you should visit a clinic nearby, which look pretty scary with the various teeth they display in their shop windows - they may gobble you up before you know where you are.
