“Strange belief ”

Vaisha Dev (Toothache Tree)
Reviewed October 17, 2016 via mobile

Vaisha Dev (toothache tree) is a small lump of a tree with lots of coins fixed on it. There is a strange belief that if you have any pain in the tooth. You go fix a coin your pain will go. It is no doubt very strange but people do it. I saw so many people came and touched it and prayed for some time and then left.

Interesting and quirky attraction. Was a little tough to find, the dozen or so locals we asked did not know where it was, but wandering the streets to find it was half the fun! Located on the corner of a street meeting a small square you will see several dentists in the area to let you know you're on the right track. Ultimately the Toothache Tree is little more than a 1-2 metre long old piece of timber with dusty coins nailed to it, hardly very attractive but an interesting thing to find. In the short time we were there, dozens of locals touched the tree and said a little prayer.

We came across this small but interesting 'tree' whilst walking in the Thamel area and were fascinated by its story. Supposedly if you have toothache you nail a coin to the 'tree' and the gods will give you relief. Not sure how this works but I am sure others will use this in their attempts to relieve the pain. Still I said a little prayer whilst there and I didn't get toothache for the rest of our journey so perhaps there is some truth in it after all.

A must visit for the dentists... It's an old dental street with still many traditional tooth pullers. Stone god is a small rock with many nailed coin. the belief goes that if you have a toothache, you go there and nail a coin and your ache is gone... Maybe, your abscess will burst after all the vibration along with the placebo effect...

Touch the coins nailed into the tree and your toothache will disappear.
