This hotel has some good and some not-so-good features. Staff are friendly and helpful, amenities such as the restaurant are convenient (especially the omelet station in the morning), and the grounds are a quiet respite from the din of the city. But the only somewhat decent rooms are on the fourth floor, all others are shabby to say the least. These rooms last saw their better days about 30-40 years ago. Good luck trying to get the lights on (at least those that work), as it's a combination of switches at the room entrance and a line-up of switches on one of the nightstands. If you're looking for a comfortable, relaxing place away from the assault-on-the-senses that is Kathmandu, stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Fourth floor courtyard is the only safe bet.

This hotel is quite close to the Thamel area of Kathmandu and therefore quite central. The building and the rooms are a bit old but it is clean. Although I didn't take advantage of the garden outside, this seems very pleasant to have a drink in. The staff was nice. A bit disappointed that the towels for 2 ppl were not available by default in the room and a bit stingy in terms of shower gel and shampoo supplies (at least for two people). No sleepers available.
Given the price paid for the room (110USD), I would expect internet to be free which was not the case.
Breakfast was very English breakfast focused and the employee took a bit to cook the fresh omelet while the rest was getting cold. A bit weird that you cannot make your own fresh toast as bread was already toasted beforehand. Overall, a good breakfast but not outstanding.
We also had dinner in the restaurant on the 2nd floor (we had fish) and the food was a bit greasy so I would not recommend going on purpose to the restaurant.

Have just had a couple of days here. The hotel is very nice, but out of the centre of the town, but there are shops nearby if you want to explore. Come out and turn left. Food good, but as l later discovered, all food in restaurants in Nepal is left uncovered. We were able to change money, but they ran out quickly.
They have a lift, but its only from the lst floor, so you need to walk up the first flight of stairs.
Rooms comfortable. The gardens are lovely for relaxing in if you have any spare time.

Room Tip: Choose one low down if you have walking problems

Stayed in this hotel before and after my trekking tour. The rooms are great - clean, spacious and comfortable. (After 18 days in the mountains the hot shower was my favorite part of the room)
In theory you don't really have to leave the hotel cause it is all there from internet to restaurants, pool and a little souvenir shop. But if you do, Thamel is only a stones throw away.

Best on the hotel is def. the staff. All very friendly and dedicated.

I have only given 4 stars cause although dinner wasn't bad, breakfast was a bit of a disappointment. The fruit tasted after nothings, there were no labels on anything so it was a bit of a guessing game what juice/fruit one was presented and an hour after service started buffet was almost empty and nothing got refilled. breakfast is definitely something they can improve on - especially when considering that many trekkers will leave from the hotel, fly to Lukla and start with trekking on same day, a good farewell breakfast can make the difference.

Spent 3 nights at the beginning of a tour with Saga, in room 515. This overlooks the garden, it's quiet and was in good, clean condition. Full bathroom with plenty of hot water at all times. Public rooms are smart though once you leave them things get shabbier. Food is very average and drinks are ridiculously expensive compared to elsewhere in Nepal. It does provide an oasis of calm just off the very hectic but endlessly fascinating streets of Kathmandu. From here we did the flight to see Mount Everest (put aside your nerves and do it!) and the wonderfully evocative town of Bhaktapur which was just stunning and highly recommended.

At the end of the tour we stayed for 1 night in room 510. It faces the pool and is not as quiet as the garden side. This room was nothing like as nice as 515 with a very grubby appearance, stained furniture and bedheads. Our experience suggests that standards are not consistent and the quality of the room will be the luck of the draw.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on 4th or 5th floors facing the gardens rather than the pool.

This is the 2nd time we stay in the Malla hotel in the last three years. The perfect location and the good service are the reasons we chose again this hotel. It is like a quiet oasis in the middle of the noisy Thamel. It is a nice place to be after a 2 weeks trek in the Himalaya but it will not be my first choice if I look for nice decorated clean room to spend a vacation. All the interior needs an argent renovation, nothing works well from the TV till the air-condition. Because the hotel is located in Kathmandu it received 3-4 stars. In the western world it should be a 2 stars hotel with the good potential to be a 4 stars hotel only after a total renovation.
The hotel has a beautiful garden and nice swimming pool which are in contrast to the poor interior.
When taking a shower you should be ready to do it in brown water… not clean, but definitely very worm with good flow.

Stayed at the Malla for a week. Spent one night on the ground floor - the rooms there are awful. The fourth floor was much better, but the rooms overlooking the swimming pool are noisy because of the hotel/guest house very close next door. The rooms overlooking the gardens are much better. Breakfast is pretty good, but otherwise meals at the hotel are very poor. Fortnately it is only a short walk into the tourist area of Thamel. On the fourth floor the rooms are cleaned well, and there are good bathrooms with hot showers, flush toilets, etc. The hotel is expensive by Nepali standards, mainly because of the Casino clientele I guess.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room that overlooks the swimming pool: there is a very noisy hotel next door which h...
