“Great looking, but with some technical faults.”
Reviewed 2 June 2012

I booked an Edge Suite through Kiwi Collection, with an upgrade subject to availability (THB6000+ per night). Upon arrival, I was brought up to the mezzanine level where they handle registration (is this permanent?). The manager on duty informed me that I had been upgraded to a Vertigo Suite (yay!).

The hotel looks great, with modern Thai-influenced design. Wood panels feature prominently as a design element with plenty of windows showcasing an OK view (mostly of apartment buildings nearby). The building seems well managed and cared for, with sufficient staff on hand for the number of guests. My room was quiet and secure at the corner of the hotel wing (the hotel is attached to a serviced apartment wing that looks a bit less attractive).

Most of the room's faults lie in the bathroom. The shower, while large and well lit with a privacy glass window as a wall, is poorly designed. The wall mount for the handshower is way too high up on the wall... I'm 6'3" (191 cm), and I had to reach way up to grab it. I don't think it would be possible for a Thai guest. The shower and toilet are separated by a pillar (concealing the pipes), but the edges of the pillar are glass. This does not quite touch the side walls, leaving a gap of a few inches. This is enough for water to pour through during even a very careful and brief shower. The result is a flooded toilet room floor, with no drainage possible. Not cool. Also, the shower and toilet are designed for exhibitionists only, with a totally transparent glass wall.

The toilet is another problem, either being engineered poorly or with improper water flow rate. When flushing, you are guaranteed that the contents will splash around and spin but not go down the drain. It takes 3-4 attempts to empty the bowl of solid waste. Gross.

The only major oversight is the lack of any music system. The suite is huge with two TVs and a massive (mostly empty) bookcase. But there is no provision for plugging in an iPhone or computer for playing music in the room.

The mini bar is also a weak spot. There is no liquor and only a small bottle of wine and a couple of beers. Snack options are just as limited. Strangely, the coffee selection is worse than most 4 star hotels, with only two sachets of instant coffee that were not replaced on the second day of my stay. I was expecting some kind of one-shot espresso machine which is common in modern hotels of this caliber.

The room service menu is also very limited, and room service seems to always be unavailable (necessitating a call-back). There are too few Thai choices on the menu, and the prices seem about 20-30% too high. The menu has only 3-4 types of red and white wine, with no liquor listed. This is available by request, but you need to know what you want. Liquor prices are reasonable.

Lastly, the hotel is missing out on a huge opportunity for a rooftop bar or lounge. The nice rooftop area is reserved for private functions only. In this area, the nearest rooftop bar is Red Sky (Centara Grand). Hansar has the right vibe and a good location to make better use of it's space. It's a shame they don't develop this further. I would have loved to book a table for a late dinner and drinks with clients if such an option were available.

Would I stay here again? With so many options in Bangkok, it's hard to say. The location is convenient for access to the BTS, but there is no street life at all. If you want to visit a super market, convenience store, or nice restaurant, you will have to take a taxi or BTS somewhere else. If the technical issues with the bathroom were solved and the AV and minibar issues addressed, Hansar would get a five star rating. As it is, I can only give it four stars. There is too much competition in Bangkok to let these things slide.

The hotel is in a very good condition. Our room was big and the bathroom very spacious. The staff is very friendly and helpful and didn't rush us out of the room on the last day. The hotel is very comfortable, cosy, warm and a good place to be. The pool deck is very nice with a bar serving drinks, but the view of next door condos is a bit boring.

The only slightly negative comment would be that the guy who brought us room service very late at night seemed very bothered by the fact he had to work at the wee hours. And the location of the hotel is a bit inconvenient if you plan on partying, as it's located in the financial district, so you have to rely on taxis and tuk-tuks.

In general I would immediately recommend staying at this hotel - you get luxury service, for which you would usually have to pay at least double the price.

Me and my wife stayed at Hansar for a night last September, to celebrate my birthday. We moved from another hotel on the day of my birthday. The room was booked under my wife's name. However, upon submitting both our passport to the hotel staff as part of the registration process, they had "spotted" my birthday, they had immediately upgraded us to a suite, eventough we booked the cheapest rate room.

The room was fantastic and comes with Bulgavri toiletries! To our suprise, a hotel staff rang our bell and gave us a birthday cake complimentary from the hotel.

We would like to say that Hansar is so far the best hotel experience that we have been to!

Stayed at Hansar after reading the fantastic reviews at Trip Advisor duing our short 3 days stay at Bangkok. The first sight was a little dissapointing ... as the hotel itself is quite small and darkly lit, with no lobby to speak of. My wife was quite dissapointed as the entry was smelling stringly of food and quite unattractive.

Frankly, the opinion changed a lot over our stay as we just could not fault the service at the place. We stayed at a Studio Suite with a nice living room/work area and HUGE bathroom. The amenities were just perfect and service was excellent, with a smile. The room had everything with a minbar thrown in for free (soft drinks and 2 bottles of beer a day).

The breakfast was a little dissapointing as we had tours on 2 days and they open up at 7am when all pickups are around 6:45am. They should seriously consider opening this earlier as is the case in most top hotels. The spread is not as extensive as large 5star hotels. The only unpleasant experience we had was an unfriendly staff at the restaurant in the morning who had a scowl while serving and found requests irritating.

The pool was nice but does not have a splash pool for kids. We made do with the Jacuzzi which was of perfect height for my 4 year old. Food was Centre World Mall and other attactions are Siam Paragon & BigC.

Only reason for one star less is that the hotel is not kid friendly and more oriented towards older customers who are looking for a quieter and less crowded hotel to relax and chill.

We stayed 3 nights 30 Apr to 03 May. The rooms were a good size - we stayed in the eastern suits (1617) and about the rate going (a tad higher perhaps). On half business - half leisure trip with wife and toddler - so they provided as requested a cot with amenities and a wonderful. Hotel is next to the Sky train stop - which is essential for travellers to the city given the unreliability of taxis, tuk tuks etc...

The staff were friendly and welcoming. The breakfast in the morning was varied with good quality food - staff were helpful and mostly friendly (depending upon the day and how busy it got!). The pool area was aesthetically beautiful, gym great, and the pool side service efficient but pricey. The new Spa was pricey but a high quality service their too.

The only downer was the concierge: they - on our first night with the toddler in tow - sent us to the sex district to get dinner! Food was great but my wife and little one were a bit shocked at first. We laughed it off and tried the concierge again - this time for a boat trip - sadly we got set up into a scam (we hired a private boat, which is not necessary in Bangkok as you can get very good tourist taxis from Central Pier for a fraction of the price!). Identifying a jogging route by them was also near impossible - luckily my travel guide pointed me to Lumpini Park, where I managed to dig out a 10Km run. So work needs to be done on the concierge team...

Overall I'd rate this hotel as very good - but just; more like it has great potential and just made it into that category for us. Will we go back - likely yes!

Room Tip: Go for the suites... if i did a longer stay and needed to work from the room - they are ideal.

We stayed here for a quick break during our travels around Thailand. After choosing the hotel on the back recommendations and feedback it was the best decision.

The hotel is modern, chic and inviting, the staff are some of the best you'll meet. Always courteous and enjoying thier job more importantly.

Everything else has been said about this hotel, stay here you won't be disappointed.
