I booked an Edge Suite through Kiwi Collection, with an upgrade subject to availability (THB6000+ per night). Upon arrival, I was brought up to the mezzanine level where they handle registration (is this permanent?). The manager on duty informed me that I had been upgraded to a Vertigo Suite (yay!).
The hotel looks great, with modern Thai-influenced design. Wood panels feature prominently as a design element with plenty of windows showcasing an OK view (mostly of apartment buildings nearby). The building seems well managed and cared for, with sufficient staff on hand for the number of guests. My room was quiet and secure at the corner of the hotel wing (the hotel is attached to a serviced apartment wing that looks a bit less attractive).
Most of the room's faults lie in the bathroom. The shower, while large and well lit with a privacy glass window as a wall, is poorly designed. The wall mount for the handshower is way too high up on the wall... I'm 6'3" (191 cm), and I had to reach way up to grab it. I don't think it would be possible for a Thai guest. The shower and toilet are separated by a pillar (concealing the pipes), but the edges of the pillar are glass. This does not quite touch the side walls, leaving a gap of a few inches. This is enough for water to pour through during even a very careful and brief shower. The result is a flooded toilet room floor, with no drainage possible. Not cool. Also, the shower and toilet are designed for exhibitionists only, with a totally transparent glass wall.
The toilet is another problem, either being engineered poorly or with improper water flow rate. When flushing, you are guaranteed that the contents will splash around and spin but not go down the drain. It takes 3-4 attempts to empty the bowl of solid waste. Gross.
The only major oversight is the lack of any music system. The suite is huge with two TVs and a massive (mostly empty) bookcase. But there is no provision for plugging in an iPhone or computer for playing music in the room.
The mini bar is also a weak spot. There is no liquor and only a small bottle of wine and a couple of beers. Snack options are just as limited. Strangely, the coffee selection is worse than most 4 star hotels, with only two sachets of instant coffee that were not replaced on the second day of my stay. I was expecting some kind of one-shot espresso machine which is common in modern hotels of this caliber.
The room service menu is also very limited, and room service seems to always be unavailable (necessitating a call-back). There are too few Thai choices on the menu, and the prices seem about 20-30% too high. The menu has only 3-4 types of red and white wine, with no liquor listed. This is available by request, but you need to know what you want. Liquor prices are reasonable.
Lastly, the hotel is missing out on a huge opportunity for a rooftop bar or lounge. The nice rooftop area is reserved for private functions only. In this area, the nearest rooftop bar is Red Sky (Centara Grand). Hansar has the right vibe and a good location to make better use of it's space. It's a shame they don't develop this further. I would have loved to book a table for a late dinner and drinks with clients if such an option were available.
Would I stay here again? With so many options in Bangkok, it's hard to say. The location is convenient for access to the BTS, but there is no street life at all. If you want to visit a super market, convenience store, or nice restaurant, you will have to take a taxi or BTS somewhere else. If the technical issues with the bathroom were solved and the AV and minibar issues addressed, Hansar would get a five star rating. As it is, I can only give it four stars. There is too much competition in Bangkok to let these things slide.
