“Modern luxury, food not strength, convenient location, great ambience”
Reviewed 9 March 2012

Stayed in a grand deluxe room, best room I've stayed in of all five star hotels so far:
- suite-like
- huge bathroom
- room is fully supplied with the latest tv & sound system gadgets ( standard for Peninsula chain rooms ) so good for those (like my hubby) who live to music & bring their own tv shows & movies
- etc etc

Food was inconsistent - Asian was not to Bangkok standard, French appears to be best here, buffets are ordinary:
- bread & desserts fantastic (World class, like being in France)
- breakfast buffet - loved the tropical fruit clearly carefully selected best quality, conversely a boring selection otherwise ( not my usual experience at an Asian hotel)
- Lunch buffet - again relatively boring
- Special convention 3 course lunch was an exception - innovative, well prepared while also simple and elegant; delicious. E.g. Caesar salad entree (deconstructed but not the showy tiny plate - a happy normal sized salad just presented prettily and with freshest perfect cos lettuce leaves, the perfect amount of dressing, 'just-so' number of Parmesan shavings, etc etc)
- Thai restaurant menu very limited - but, delicious.

Service lovely - of course Thailand is the land of a thousand smiles, and behind that the Thai people are highly cultured, smart and clued-in

Processes could be improved - little in the way of feedback requests or checks, convention planning process did not prompt for dietary requests which caused us a few problems (we didn't have a good convention planning system either so I'm afraid we - by default - relied on the hotel's experience)

Location & ambience fantastic - loved the breezy, pretty boat rides across the river (and never waited more than 5 minutes) , the tailors and massage and noodle shops and ATMs located within the 100m radius of the Peninsula Pier (loving my new work slacks - finally good copies of my favourite slacks & within 24 hours too!), and same for convenient access to the SkyTrain station aka convenient access to all the cultural & historical sites in Bangkok.

We got a very good rate due to our convention buying power so can't comment on value for money. But within reason, will return here if wanting a five star luxury hotel stay.

Room Tip: River view if possible, grand deluxe rooms are more than you'd expect - pay for the upgrade if y...

Thai Air had misplaced our luggage after an eighteen hour flight, and the start of two days in Bangkok to be followed by a week in India! So there we were, jet lagged and anxious. The staff at the Peninsula could not have been more helpful. They let us check in early (8:30 am early), gave us emergency survival kits, and managed to track down our luggage which Thai Air delivered at 10:00 that night. Our rom is gorgeous and the staff are unfailingly charming! Having to take the hotel ferry over to the Oriental's fery dock does not even count as a negative - if anything it adds to the charm and relaxation. We never have to wait more than a few minutes and the ferry just gives us another opportunity to enjoy the charming hospitality of The Peninsula's staff.

A frequent traveller to Bangkok (in fact we lived there for 18 months), we had never stayed at The Peninsula. I must admit I initially had concerns about staying here. We always stay downtown and I was a little hesitant thinking we might be isolated. Absolutely not the case. The hotel has their little boats that run you over the river to River City or the skytrain and it was very easy and oh so relaxing. My favourite part of the day was breakfast on the riverside. This hotel makes relaxation so easy. From the check in process to the check out process, everything is streamlined. The service is fantastic and very unassuming. Breakfast was extensive, the cappucinos great, the room service menu delicious, I would not hesitate to go back. We arrived late and had a king room reserved. Unfortunately by the time we arrived, they were all gone, fortunately that meant only one thing...UPGRADE. Our suite was so fabulous, I wanted to cancel Koh Samui and stay!!. It was just the perfect start to a wonderful Thai vacation. And I am a complete convert and will choose The Peninsula for my future visits.

Stayed here for three nights in a Grande Deluxe room.

This is as close to perfect as you can get and I would find it hard to fault the hotel in any way. It's like they have thought endlessly about every little detail and they've totally nailed it here!

I usually stay in the Sheraton Grande in Bangkok which is currently my favourite hotel in the world, but there is little to differentiate these two hotels. I prefer the location of the Sheraton as it is more central but for a holiday hotel, the Peninsula with its riverside setting is perfect.

It is expensive but search around and deals can be had and you have to treat yourself to a stay here, even if it is for only one night.

Although it's on the south side of the river and not so central as some of the Sukhumvit hotel, it has a lot of charm.

The room was very nicely appointed, good view of the river and city towadrs the Rama IV bridge. the breakfast buffet is one of the best I've had and the pool area is beautiful. A nice escape from the bustle of Bangkok when you need it.

Another advantage of staying here is the restaurant River Cafe. You can normally get a table right by the river, and sit outside. The food was also very good and very reasonable especially comparing to Hong Kong prices.

They operate a complimentary river taxi service for guests to get over the river.

All in all a very good value stay.

I spent two nights on a weekend at the Peninsula Bangkok early February 2012 for around 135USD a night (booked through my agent).
This may not be a palace but is definitely 5 stars and worth the price.

The swimming pool is beautiful (and the service is really good - while the prices are 5 stars, not Thai : a friend asked for a brand of beer they had not, we chose another one and at the next round, they had found the one he wanted - either in another bar or at the convenient store next door, we did not ask). Some mosquitoes in the evening though but you cannot really blame the hotel for that...

Rooms are rather large with enough space for a desk, sofa and coffee table (plus large bathroom with bath + shower and a walk-in closet). A bowl of fruits is on the table: rather common in posh hotels in Asia but always much appreciated. I believe they all have the river view, to be confirmed by the next reviewer.

Breakfast is on the terrace along the river, a great way to start the day!

Main drawback could be the location, south of the river, however, there are shuttle boats to cross all day until midnight (when they also close the bar along the river). One of the shuttle goes to the skytrain, which is rather convenient given how awful the taxis are in Bangkok.

Overall, it is a great place to relax from the buzz of Bangkok or wherever you come from.
