“The Best In Bangkok For Business Trips”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

Almost all the reviews I see here are accurate. The hotel is lovely and some have considered it in the top 5 in the world. Yes, the hotel is expensive. Yes, it is somewhat dated. An excellent arrangement for business meetings with a dedicated entrance right off the lovely courtyard. I've heard that the King of Thailand and other heads of state have used the meeting area here. The food is fine, although not exceptional. The service is as good as you will find anywhere. Again, if you're attending a business meeting at the hotel, you will love the convenience and splendor here.

If you're just vacationing, I would more suggest you consider a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area. There are a number of excellent hotels there, and you will find more options for transportation. The Peninsula, like the Oriental, is on the river, and somewhat isolated from shopping and nightlife.

Room Tip: You'll love the suites at the Peninsula, but they are terribly pricey.

This is our favourite locus in Bangkok since several years. It is part of the famous Oriental-Peninsula-Shangri-La triangle.

As with all 1st class hotels, restaurants or flight cabins it also takes 1st class customers to work out. Without them it is not possible. The Oriental exempted, also the Peninsula suffers from this contemporary problem.

The main attraction at the Peninsula for us is the suites. They are by any standard very well planned and decorated and nice to stay in. Both the Oriental and the Shangri-La has a problem in this respect, having some well-planned but also several poorly planed suites.
We do not wish to play roulette on that issue. At the Peninsula you know what you get.

The pool area is more than OK. If you do not like crowds, stay away during peak hours. The pool is open till 23:00. If you like privacy, go there in the evening, or early in the morning. Regardless, where else can you have such a view from a pool? The Oriental and the Shangri-La cannot compete.

Yes, the breakfast can be crowded some days of the week. Still, the hotel offers several places for breakfast in such cases and the breakfast as such is basically 1st class. But do you homework, plan ahead and make a reservation the day before.

On balance the Oriental offers staff with the best skills in English. It also has the best ambiance on the terrace restaurant/bar.

The Thai restaurant: When it comes to serving Thai food, there are intrinsic limitations. You can have it fancy style at 1st class prices but also at a tenth of that price down the road without losing much in taste. The charm of Thai food lies in the simplicity.

The terrace bar at the Peninsula is basically 3-star. To us it is extremely annoying that the staff starts closing the bar an hour ahead of official closing, removing bottles, turning off the fans and tweaking the lights. The bar section is also too small. The long-drinks are really not interesting at all. The drinks menu should be revised. It is mainly based upon (too) sour lemon/ lime recipes. We recommend they copy the drinks menu of the Indigo Pearl hotel in Phuket!

Finally, the 'signature' hamburger is more or less a catastrophe. The hotel has several good chefs and since making a well tasting piece of hamburger with a good texture is no secret within the business the Peninsula should just start over again. Meanwhile, order a Club Sandwich. Albeit not officially on the Terrace menu, it is a superior choice.

Room Tip: Above the 10th floor.

I stayed in the duplex suite at the Peninsula this week and the whole experience was amazing !
So what makes it so good ?
The staff are the kindest warmest people that you will have ever met.
The food is stunning and will blow your taste buds away.
The rooms are like palaces and are furnished to 6 star standard.
The setting in the edge of the river is the most peaceful place in Bangkok.

This hotel has just gone into my No 1 slot - it surpassed all my expectations.

My husband and I along with another couple stayed at The Peninsula for 3 nights the beginning of April. From the moment we arrived, we were impressed. The room we had was lovely, although I agreed a bit dated, however that was not the deciding factor of this hotel. Service was impeccable. I was consistently amazed with the attention we received, with the staff going above and beyond for us. The breakfast was plentiful, with many choices, and the dining area overlooking the river was great. Sitting by the pool the attendants were always available, and brought around cold towels in the afternoon to refresh you.
I would like to mention that I read the reviews of this hotel that were rated "average" or below, and the derogatory comments that were made were, in my opinion, silly. If someone didn't grab my bag straight away, I didn't notice. I never expected an upgrade simply because it was my first time staying here.

I would highly recommend this hotel.

Everything is excellent, the first class and not stiff service, the warm smiles, the pool, the food and breakfast, the sizes of the room, the location and all the little services and extras you receive thrughout the day!
Great Business Hotel also, super organised and free wireless!!! I would go there any time again.

I booked here because of its reputation and the many good reviews.
However as a seasoned traveller I have to say I was rather disappointed.

Firstly, when we stepped onto the hotel ferry at Thaksin BTS pier, the lad who was supposed to be helping us with our bags did not immediately offer to take mine, so that as I was stepping onto the ferry, carrying a bag, I almost fell.

One then arrives at the hotel on the other side of the Chao Praya river and walks along various corridors and up steps to the reception. Nothing remarkable, except that since everyone seems to rave about this hotel, it feels like an anti- climax - there should be a separate reception for people arriving on the river side, a welcome drink or something like that - nothing.

The receptionist was very quick and efficient and showed us to our deluxe room- only on the 9th floor- good enough view of river and Bangkok, but as this is our first time here, surely an upgrade to a higher floor to impress us? But no.

Now, the room- 1980s luxury, but rather dated.

Very comfortable sofa. Wood paneled window frame area. Dark wooden bedside and tv furniture.
As others have pointed out, no tea/ coffee facilities apart from a kettle- but no tea or coffee - one has to ring for all that, colonial style. This may suit the over 70's or those with aristocratic pretensions, but hey, most modern people like to just go to the kettle and 3 mins later their tea is ready.

The bed - acceptable, but only just. An old fashioned mattress, too firm, which certainly doesn't meet the standards of, say, the Westin Heavenly beds. The beds creaks, for goodness sake, when I move about- how old is this thing? The pillows were excellent.

There are no power points next to the bed, so I find myself without power in my laptop, having to plug it in above the mini-bar fridge or at the desk or in the room foyer where there are power-points.

A good flat screen tv with lots of channels, but there's no on-screen menu, so you have to consult a list next to the bed.

No in house movies though there is a DVD players - but I didn't know this so didn't come prepared with DVDs

The best feature is the 1980s marble bathroom, with TV above the bath and nice big bath towels - bath products pleasant but nothing fantastic.

We had breakfast here each day and the choices of food in the buffet were excellent. Dinner at the terrace one evening, where a rather aggressive staff member had told us earlier we couldn't have a table next to the balcony railing (close to the river) - then when we arrived we were given one. Didn't create impression of professionalism.

Swimming pool was too warm - they need a cooled pool in this heat. The pool staff were excellent and very attentive - true 5 star service. Not enough covered sala's at the pool - the other seats had umbrellas which aren't enough in the heat. The salas have a ceiling fan which was great in the tropical heat.

So, my feeling immediately is that I won't stay here again until there's been a full refurbishment to modernize the place.

I know I can do better elsewhere in Bangkok, e.g. Le Meridien where I've stayed previously and been very happy.

If you are nostalgic for the 1980s - type plush hotel, The Pen might be a good choice, but otherwise I can't recommend it- the feel was more of being in a time warp than of up to date luxury.

Service is clearly very good, but this doesn't make up for the dated sense I have of it.

The hotel is very well located. The staff is very pleasant and always offers good advice. The rooms are well equipped and the view is not exceptional. The hotel is close to the skytrain so it is very convenient for shopping at MBK. A great value!
