“The best hotel I have stayed in”
Reviewed 5 April 2012

I spent two nights in Bangkok in late March 2012, essentially just a long stopover between a Phuket holiday and returning to Australia. Many colleagues had recommended the Banyan Tree as a great hotel and well located, but I also queried the Fine Hotel and Resort accommodation because of the extra benefits I get there. Eventually I decided to test them both out with one night in the Banyan based on recommendations, and one night next door in the Sukhothai due to the FHR benefits.
The Banyan Tree was fantastic, equal to the best hotels I have stayed in anywhere. The views and the rooftop / high floor restaurants just stunning. The Sukhothai, however, was a whole other step up. No city views of course, it's quite a low building, but everything was perfect. I was upgraded to an Executive Deluxe Room and it was massive - easily as large as my entire apartment back home. Everything was beautiful, everything I wanted was there, the service was truly impeccable, right down to the bottomless supply of truffles on the desk which seemed to always be replenished each time I returned to my room.
I also had the set Thai lunch in the Celadon restaurant, which was very nice (and complimentary, thank you FHR) and a 90 min massage in the day-spa which was easily the best I had in Thailand (and I had a lot!).
It sounds cheeky to say, but next time I'm in Bangkok I will stay at the Sukhothai and eat/drink at the Banyan Tree for the views.

Room Tip: My view was over the hotel entrance. I quite enjoyed watching the comings and goings, and vehicle no...

Traveling to the Sukhothai is always a welcome experience. The pool and the staff are a highlight and the Lamont shop is a wonderful accent to a lovely and refreshing stay in the Thai capital.

We treated ourselves to a stay here for two nights after 4 weeks of travelling in Vietnam and Thailand. We had made a reservation for a deluxe room, and had a view to the pool. The room might need a little update, but it did not bother us. The room was big, the bed was wonderful, and the bathroom had all one might need, even a yellow rubber duck on the side of the bathtub:-)
The only drawback, since we wanted to splurge, was that the pick up from the hotel at the airport, did not show. We took a taxi to the hotel, a lot cheaper off course, but still. The reservation of the pick up was in order, but we did not get any apologies about this. oh well, we didnt think to much about it, because, the staff, the hotel, the breakfast and la scala restaurant all lived up to our very high expectations, and we felt very well rested before our very long flight back home to Norway. We would definately come back to The Sukhothai hotel.

still love this hotel, best beds, deluxe rooms need updating a little at some point but service is fabulous and do not think any hotel can beat it in Bangkok for style. Free Wifi. La Scala restaurant still superb. I stay whenever in Thsiland as do numerous friends and it's like home. My only negative was an art exhibition which was not up to the standard of the hotel.

We stayed at the Sukothai for 2 nights at the start to our honeymoon. Despite being a business hotel, it is actually very romantic; beautiful grounds, cosy rooms, amazing service. We were treated to a bottle of prosecco, which was on ice and waiting for us as we arrived! The staff were all amazing. The breakfast buffet was the best we've ever had -- pretty much anything you might desire, cooked perfectly (Best. Waffle. Ever).

I would recommend taking the limo service to/from the airport. Despite being pricey (2800-ish bhat), it is worth every cent. After spending nearly two hours in the immigration line at BKK, to be greeted and ushered into a beautiful car with cold towels and a seamless transfer to the hotel was *so* appreciated.

The only odd experience we had was one night when we asked the concierge where we might be able to walk around. Admittedly, it was late (9:30pm-ish), but we were jet lagged. Really, we just thought we'd like to see a little of Bangkok. Unfortunately, she sent us to Patpong, which was revolting. We left right away. We were very surprised that such a sophisticated hotel would recommend it... but perhaps other guests like it more than we did (?!) Very odd.

At any rate, we loved the Sukothai and returned for the last night of our vacation instead of staying near the river, which had been our original plan. The initial room we had overlooked the pool, the second overlooked the courtyard -- both beautiful views, clean, amazingly comfortable.
