“Warm and Friendly”
Reviewed 23 March 2011

We stayed at Kavil for nearly a month. The staff is incredibly friendly. Rooms were some of the cheapest we found (250 baht) and very clean. The location is great, lots of inexpensive eating option right out the door. On a quiet street that has little traffic. Just down from where the Sunday night market is held. Good WIFI signal in our room.

This is a review for two stays that I had here in February 2005 and February 2006, both for about a week each.

Kavil (pronounced Ka-vin) Guesthouse is a charming family-run guesthouse in a great location of Chiang Mai. It is a 5 minute walk to the old city gate (try Jerusalem Falafel restaurant nearby), and about a 15-20 minute walk to the Night Market. It is in the middle of everything and so cheap!

A room there was about 5 dollars a night at the time. The owners are a husband and wife Thai couple who enjoy socializing with their mostly international guests. Meals are served downstairs in the open air patio. Rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable.

The owners will also help recommend different excursions in the Chiang Mai area. We booked a one-day cooking class through them, and a 3 day trek, as well. Also, if you get stomach-sick, they make a wonderful cup of fresh ginger tea.

Will definitely be back on my next trip to Chiang Mai.

Kavil is down a quiet soi near Thapae Gate in the old part of Chiang Mai. It is very convenient for the Sunday Market and easy to get to other locations with songthaews and tuk-tuks. It has a friendly, family type atmosphere - the staff are great. Rooms are clean and the prices excellent. The lobby also serves as a small eatng/drinking area. I was wondering when I started this review why I was the first but it has occurred to me now - maybe Kavil is the best kept secret in Chiang Mai! Oops, secret is out now - dam!
