Owner description: Khamthiang Market is a gem in Chiang Mai. The hidden-away flower market offers a wide variety of flora and fauna and is right next to the Lotus Supermarket. It is a great place to see where locals shop for flowers.

Hundreds of stands where they sell flowers and seeds of all sorts. Only interesting if you care about flowers or gardening.

This enormous flower market is well worth a visit to see the variety of trees, plants. Flowers (including orchids), garden decor and stoneware and equipment for fountains too. Not forgetting the koi farm and pets too. Although most tourists will not be able to take home much of what is on sale, Kampthiang should provide inspiration to all gardeners. On weekends there is an interesting farmers bio/organic market nearby with plenty of choice.
There is a large Tesco Lotus shopping mall beside the market itself, which begins to close at around 5.30 p.m. Apart from the reasonably priced shopping there is variety of restaurants in the mall which closes on most days at 9 p.m. too.
JJ, the road leading to Tesco and the flower market gets very lively after dark with a wide choice restaurants and bars – many with live music.

The first thing I must clarify, is that Khamthiang is not a flower market. It is a garden nursery, selling an immense range of plants, gardening accessories, and garden ornaments - most of them bordering on the totally kitsch.

Do not come here expecting to buy a bunch of cut flowers.

I live in Rayong, 900 km south of Chiang Mai, and I have a large garden on which I spend a lot of money for plants and a lot of time looking after it, and even more time just sitting in it and enjoying it.

So I went to Khamthiang to see if there was anything exotic that I could bring back to Rayong. There were some interesting bromeliads, but I already have dozens of different types, so I passed.

Nevertheless, I spent a happy hour and a half just browsing around and checking out the offerings.

Oh, 15 minutes of that was enjoying a morning cup of coffee from one of the refreshment stalls at the market.

We went to the Tescos nearby to get some shopping and had a wander around here. It was nice to look at the different types of plants they grow in Thailand, there was a nice cafe that served lovely food and drink too.

We live in Chiang Mai and if we need some fresh flowers or something for our garden then off we go to Kamthieng Flower Market. There are also some shops selling aquariums and fish ponds.

It is a wide ranging collection of independent shops that together make up a huge gardening centre.

It is not designed as a tourist attraction but if you enjoy your gardening and want to see what a Northern Thai gardening centre looks then you should enjoy an hour or so at Kamthieng flower market.

I particularly enjoy the Orchid section.
