Location was good - about 20min walk to main tourist attractions and 10mins to night bazaar (or quick cheap tuk tuk ride away). The room was nice with a high view although there was an ugly deserted building foundation directly below.

The service was great, very friendly staff. Room was spacious and clean although it was quite noisy in the morning and we could hear the shower next door making loud noises. I'm sure the hotel was once very luxurious (in the 70's) but now seems a bit dated and could do with a revamp. Overall good value for money.

Stayed 6 nights, the hotel upgraded us to a deluxe room, very clean & very good bathroom. Staff speak quite good english & are all very helpful with the reception being very proffessional & fast check in.Cleaners very accomodating.Breakfast had a huge variety both western & asian. Restaurants have a good menu & not badly priced,You can walk to night markets.

Room Tip: book 4 nights or more.

Stayed 4 nights May 2011. Hotel should only be rated 3 stars very outdated carpet old well worn in rooms, mould in bathrooms, non smoking rooms are not that. Meals in the chinesse restuarant very over priced, for a meal thats not that crash hot, plenty of other hotels to choose from for the same price. Look a bit harder for a quality stay in Chiang Mai.

The staff here are extremely friendly, from the pickup by the driver at the airport, throughout the duration of the visit. The night market is a good ten minute stroll down the main road but is near enough for it not to be too inconvenient. The room was really stylish and we felt completely at home instantly - it was spotlessly clean, well maintained and very comfortable.

The food in the restaurant was simply outstanding for taste and value, and one evening we were given complementary brandy shots - just out of the blue - for being a customer.

Could only have one (small) minus point, that there was no room safe in the room itself.

Overall, a quality stay and, should i be going to Chiang Mai again would consider the Empress in the first instance.

I stayed for 10 nights in this beautiful hotel as part of a package tour. It has been a long time since i have stayed in a hotel in Thailand with such charm. Every single member of staff are all smiles and friendly. They really are what makes this hotel such a special place. There is no pretentiousness about the Empress, it is an excellent provincial hotel that exudes and celebrates its location at the center of the Lanna culture in Thailand.

It is perfectly positioned just on the edge of the tourist areas and in a quiet location away from the hawkers and commercial centre. Yet, it is just a 10 minute walk from the night markets and 20 minutes walk from the Old City.

The rooms are well appointed, spacious and intelligently designed. The rooms are spotless and kept that way with a very dedicated and effective House Team. The reception staff are the best I have ever encountered anywhere, not just in Thailand. From walking through he hotel door to starting to unpack in my room, took less than 10 minutes.

The Coffee Lounge and Bar is a great place to relax and has an in-house live band each night starring the vivacious "Vivi" and the very talented Emotion Band. They easily knock out MOTR tunes all night and having watched them for 9 nights in a row, I can vouch for their versatility. They were even kind enough to play a few requests and no tune seems to be a problem. Complimenting them is the Coffee Lounge and Restaurant team for whom nothing is too difficult. Moi, Watcharee and their colleagues are very endearing and attentive.

Whilst I was there all drinks were at 2 for 1 from early evening to midnight which makes the prices the same as outside the hotel. There is an enormous choice at Buffet Breakfast catering for all ethnic tastes. Lunchtime and Evening buffets were equally varied and expansive. Plenty of vegetarian choices as most meals can be offered meat free. All food is prepared to a high standard and this is the first hotel in Thailand where I have had western style food that is of excellent quality and matches the Asian offerings. The Bolognese with a glass of house red wine is simply outstanding. All soups are made in house and I loved the tomato and french onion soups.

The hotel is well designed and compact with everything within easy reach of your room and the main entrance. The reception area is quite stunning with local Lanna paintings, statues and statuettes. Towers of elaborate flowering roses make up the centre piece of the reception area complimented by the elaborate wooden structures around the hall. The conference facilities appear to be more than adequate and quite charming compared to the concrete boxes you may encounter in a more modern hotel. Whilst I was there the hotel entertained multi-national seminars entertaining guests from Japan, USA and Asia. There is a convention centre sistered with the hotel across the road which is used for many events including weddings.

Also, near to, or on the approach road to the hotel is a hairdresser, tour operator, bank with ATM, local general store and 2 massage shops. I used one of the masage shops for a foot massage and have to say it was excellent. No silly young girls, just well trained staff able to make you relax and enjoy and inexpensive experience. If you are religious and not buddhist then I counted at least 3 churches nearby and 1 Mosque within easy walking distance.

The hotel also has a Chinese restaurant and Brasserie if you have something to celebrate and want to splash out. The pool area is ok but is not the hotels main feature, however, the view of the surrounding hills is not bad from there.

The bulk of people who were staying there were aged 30 up and were a mix of solos and couples and business people. Local people use the buffet at lunch tiime and all prices are very reasonable. If you are staying more than 3 nights then you are offered discounts on some bills including laundry, which is an excellent service. Despite there being a few business people or wedding guesta in the hotel at times, I was never made to feel I was secondary to them. On the first and last night at the hotel I was presented with gifts. This truly was a home from home and i will definately be back.

The Empress is now 20 years old and just reaching her prime. She is carefully managed and wonderfully staffed. Long may she reign as the hotel to offer the Chiang Mai experience from check-in to check-out. Simply special.

Room Tip: Long stay more than 3 days and high floor

They served an huge breakfast that was delicous and my overall stay there was great. *A little side note the airconditioning control and all the light controls are on the bedside table.
