The Dhara Dhevi defies appropriate descriptions! Anyone who has cultivated an appreciation of fine architecture, history, art, antiques and replicas of fine antiques, and attention to detail will be enthralled by DD. The dream of the owner was to build a royal Burmese Mandalay Palace and grounds, complete with working rice fields, water wheels, ponies, an enormous water buffalo and his flute-playing caretaker! Let me begin with staff who take their positions to embellish guests' stays seriously.
Tim, my female therapist, is, by far, the best at any spa anywhere in the world, (and, in more than 50 years of world travel this says a lot); Mejuran, our private butler ensured our stay was as complete as possible, even bringing us cold water minutes before we boarded our return taxi! Udom escorted me to meet the sweet but giant buffalo in the fields, and he alerted me the next day when the buffalo was about to swim! Such a treat to witness this gentle giant representative of Southeast Asian countries and their wet rice cultivation!
Wichai Chonlahan, the general manager, is a great DD ambassador. WiLan, I hope I am spelling his name correctly, was very kind to us at breakfast. Housekeeping staff are unobtrusive and thorough. The villa, which I would love to stay in for MONTHS, was perfect! It overlooked the rice fields and we could sit on one of two areas and watch the water fowl, butterflies, red dragonflies, and birds and squirrels' antics in the trees and bushes.
The breakfast buffet was wonderful. How many buffets did you see a wooden frame holding a honeycomb from a beehive? It dripped fresh honey into beautiful spoons!!! The buffet incorporated many cuisines and they have a extra menu whereby you can order additional types of omelettes, eggs Benedict, cooked cereals etc. My quinoa, chia seed almond milk porridge was OUTSTANDING! The juice bar had bael fruit juice! You could order any type of fresh cold squeezed juices.
The spa: imagine a gorgeous carved slab of pale marble HEATED upon which you lay for a fantastic body scrub, exfoliation! Ahhhhh. Then additional treatments per a myriad of selections ordered earlier. I had a Qi, acupressure combo which was incredible! You can select from packages or a la carte. We were asked often if we wanted a golf cart transport from A to B or if we wanted to use their free bicycles, but we walked everywhere so we could take photos of the buildings, the foliage, the architecture and details, the sculptures, and so many fascinating features EVERYWHERE!!! Our villa had curved vaulted ceilings. This means each plank of wood had to be soaked in water and bent exactly the same curvature to build the ceiling. The villas are all different, as the owner must have an unlimited imagination!!!
My husband and I hope to stay at Dhara Dhevi in the future. Yes, this replica of a royal palace and grounds takes a huge effort to maintain, especially in a tropical monsoon climate! Yet, the moss growing on areas of the buildings, the charming roofs, and the wooden walkways meandering through the rice paddies, all make the EXPERIENCE rich, intense, and totally unforgettable!!!!! My husband and I wish we could thank the owner in person. DD gave me a lifetime of memories in one birthday weekend!

This is my second stay at Dhara Dhevi. I stayed there for 3 night in 2016 in a Colonnial Room which was amazing with direct access to the pool. The colonial rooms are all being refurnished so we booked a 2 storey villa and couldn't have been more delighted. We had a huge outdoor patio area with jacuzzi and day bed. The villa was the size of a house you could get lost in it! We travel all over the world and previously our favourite hotel is the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok but I have to say that the Dhara Dhevi is an unbelievable hotel. Yes, it is expensive by Ciang Mai standards but you get what you pay for. The food and service and amenities are second to none. The breakfast setting is so relaxing on the outside terrace you would feel you were a million miles from Chiang Mai. The fitness Centre gave us bicycles which we loved riding around the grounds on and down to the cake shop for tea and cake. There were several restaurants and all were equally of a very high standard and not overly expensive but certainly higher quality that you would have outside of the resort. There are excellent complimentary classes at the fitness centre and I also took up personal thai boxing classes which were fantastic. We hired a car to get around and with a sat nav didn't have too many difficulties. We stayed for 8 nights and did not want to leave. We are booking to return in May 2018 for a longer stay and I can't wait!!!!! Thank you so much to everyone at the hotel for everything. You were all so obliging for anything we needed and more. I can't wait to see you all again next year for a longer stay.

As previous reviewers have noted, the Dhara Dhevi is a destination in itself.

We stayed as a family in Villa #1 which had a private pool and jacuzzi. The whole property was well kept and it had nice touches for those coming with young children. I think it is the first time I have seen a hotel provide small bathrobes and slippers for kids!! They provided nice snacks at night and also provided mosquito repellents and a generous daily provision for bottled water - the latter two are essentials.

The property is quirky - going both directions. For our (and likely others) villa, having more than two people (esp a third adult) can be tricky as the third bed is really the sectional couch in the living area which consists of a thin cushion on wood - which is passable to sit on but is inadequate for a good night's sleep.

The other odd thing with our villa was the layout. The "indoor" shower was outdoors on the 2nd floor balcony (and no, there was no tub). It was essentially a closet with a shower and you have to step out into the outdoors to step into an 'indoor' shower. Ironically, this shower closet is located on the balcony right next to a REAL outdoor shower. It is a novelty to be on the balcony, view the rice paddies, your private pool. But doing all that while getting accessing an 'indoor' shower was a quirk too much for us. This inconvenience is also emphasized since you cannot get from the private outdoor pool to the showers without walking through the entire villa - through the living room, going up the stairs to the 2nd level, going through a hallway and through the bathroom proper.

When we first arrived, we were apprehensive of being dependent on the golf carts for transportation but they were very prompt and we had no issue. Again the quirks go both ways, since going on the golf carts also gives you an excellent way to view the expansive property.

The variety and quality at breakfast is excellent. We have been to many and there is nothing more we can ask for. We tend to go to the left side area with the local and asian cuisine (for those who like their western cereal and rice crispies -- there is a separate buffet on the right). There is a mix of hot dimsum, a honey comb where you can scrape your own honey, and also a stand where you can have juice blended from fresh fruit on demand.

For those with kids, there is a fairly well equipped kids club with toys and activities. It is cute and the kids club looks like a miniature hut but with modern toys/equipment. We wanted to check out the Thai dancing lesson for kids but it was too late when we found out about it. They also have ponies grazing the grounds and the albino water buffalo that makes his appearance in the morning.

We also tried out the spa which was very nice. Unlike most spas, this was not buried underground but was in its own building. I could hear birds but no other noise. The spa rooms are all equipped with its own private bathroom and changing room which was nice. The attendants were trained and professional and they had nice touches like providing an organic thai snack at the end of your treatment.

The pool area was great and the decor blended in with the property's architecture and features. The pool area and the man made 'ruins' makes it feel like an unreal theme park, esp when the water buffallo makes his way on the horizon while you are doing laps.

We also visited the library. They had a good selection of books and DVDs you can borrow, and return at check out. It also had a substantial gift shop.

There was an interesting private mall at the entrance, which I think is part of the property. If we are not sightseeing we usually are in our villa so we were not able to really browse in detail. Another activity that you should not miss would be dinner at the Le Grand Lanna. The food was great and they had classical dancers perform the traditional Thai dance/play. All the details in the performance and cuisine are professionally done.

With all their amenities, excellent personnel and astounding facility (rice paddies, ponies and all!), the Dhara Dhevi is a place where you can settle into and it would be hard to leave to sightsee Chiang Mai. Highly recommend for families. I had to think hard if i wanted to give 5 stars since we are still unhinged by the experience of walking through mosquitoes to get to a shower - however, it is hard not to give a perfect rating with EVERYTHING else that came with our stay. I'll give it a perfect score strongly coupled with the advice to look for a normal hotel room instead of a villa.

Room Tip: Villas are pretty but a little too quirky. Before you upgrade, consider pros of a more normal hotel room

Thank you Tim,F and the other staff of Dhara Dhevi! The rice field farming was a new and funny experience for me! Friendly staff and the clean room made me feel comfortable. Shame that there's not a lot local restaurants and places to see around Dhara Dhevi, we have to take the uber to go the old city every night! But this is still a nice place to stay! Thank you and hope to see you guys again in the future!

The grounds are impressive and beautiful. We enjoyed walking by the paddy fields especially.

A reasonably good variety of restaurants that offered quality food. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet, and dinners at the Italian and Thai restaurants. Afternoon tea was slightly underwhelming, perhaps our expectations were higher.

Service by our butler Top was excellent. As was the staff at the Kids Club. Not quite the same level of service elsewhere within the resort.

In summary for the price paid, we felt there are better exclusive resort offerings in Thailand from an overall perspective. Having said that, it could be a nice one off experience, just don't think it's somewhere we'd return again and again. We got the impression that the place was challenged to maintain its glorious architecture at its optimum.
