Thank you to Indochina Junk for our wonderful overnight experience on the 4 cabin junk.
7 years ago we used Indochina Junk to do the same overnight stay. The junk, crew and amenities where exceptional and we had the best time ever. I am glad to say that this latest trip did not disappoint. Again it was fantastic and all our needs seen to. If you want a well organised, personalised overnight tour, in a lovely boat then choose Indochina Junk.

We sailed on Dragon Legend#1 3D2N cruise. We have never tried other Halong Bay cruises, so can't compare with other boats. But we are very happy with our choice. From what we could see at the port, Dragon Legend (1 & 2) were the most beautiful ships out there. The staff on Dragon Legend were all hard working and friendly.

I booked with Indochina Junk directly, because I had questions and requests to make, and wanted to avoid the middle man. The price quote from an travel agent was slightly lower, but it did not include the Hanoi transfer. It was included when booked directly. Email communications were prompt, and the booking was easy. I paid 50% in advance, and paid the rest at their office in Hanoi after we got there.

We were overall happy with the ship. It is showing wear and tear, with stains and peeled wallpapers, etc. Out bathroom sink was missing one of the cabinet doors too.
But we liked the look and the atmosphere. The room was a good size, much bigger than the standard ocean view room on those Caribbean cruise ships. Since we had one kid(8), they put a twin size bed in our room. This made the space tight and we could not really use the sitting area, but we were glad to have this extra bed.

3D2N was good itinerary. On the first day we enjoyed kayaking. On the second day, we went to the floating village, which included a stop to a pearl farm. We then went to one of the island and visited a cave there (Thien Canh Son cave). The cave was small and a bit disappointing. Then we had a BBQ lunch right there on the beach. The seafood BBQ on the beach was quite good. We had little time to enjoy the beach. Wish they had given us more time. later we went to kayaking again. We skipped the evening cooking class(spring rolls) and rested in our cabin. The manager and one of the waiters brought plates of food for us separately. Great service. On the third day all you do on the ship is eat (breakfast and brunch) and enjoy the scenery. It was relaxing. Visit to Yen Duc Village for the water puppet show was included. The show was a bit underwhelming, but the place was clean and it was nice to break the long drive.

We were happy with our choice and enjoyed the cruise. But not everything was perfect, so I deducted one star.

About the transportation...we were supposed to be picked up by a "luxury van" at our hotel, but it was KIA mini van that showed up. Not exactly what I call luxury...but that was fine since we did not have to share with others. The driver was nice, but he was a smoker. Though he did not smoke in the car, I could smell the smoke in the mini van and made me a bit nauseous during the long drive. On the way back to Hanoi we were put in the luxury van, but WiFi was not always working. We paid extra to be taken to a hotel away from the Old Quarter, but we had to share the van with others. Those others were not going to the same direction, and the van went to the Old Quarter area to drop them off first. Then we had to sit through the Hanoi traffic.

Food was overall good. Not the best you could have in Vietnam, but fine. On the last night we had beef that was too hard to chew, but other than that food was fine. Our issue was that our dietary restriction request was not met one time. But other than this one time, they always prepared the separate dish for our needs. We tried to explain that food gallery is not just a skin rash, and I hope they understand and communicate with all the Indochina Junk's ships.

We tried the couple's massage, but the spa is small and our beds were set apart. They can only take 1 couple at a time. The massage was okay. The hard bed and old towel did not provide enough cushioning for my head while my shoulders were pressed.

The best part of Dragon Legend was the crews. We could see they are all hard workers. Smiley was our guide and his English was good, and he was an excellent guide. One of the crews played an musical instrument for us after dinner on the second day, and that was very nice. They encourage people to write reviews, so they must be confident with what they do. And they should be, but there are just few things they could improve.

There are many cruises to choose from. What made me chose Indochina Junk are:
1)They advertised that they can accommodation dietary restrictions.
2) They go to the less crowded area. You still won't be the only boat though.
3) You don't have to change the boat on the second day. You do get on tender boat and bamboo boat when visiting floating village and an island, but they don't use the main boat to go get the new set of customers while you are off the boat.
4) They are environmentally conscious. They try to educate fishermen, encourage us to pickup the garbage while kayaking, etc.

The reason #4 alone is good enough to pick this company over others, because what people have done to this bay is sad to see.

We opted for a private boat for 2 couples vs the larger 48 room luxury junk and decided to stay a bit longer than the typical one night or day cruise option that are typically recommended. Be warned it is a long 4 hour ride to get from Hanoi to Halong Bay so we felt we totally made the right decision to stay longer. While the other boats left at 7ish to head back to the dock to return those on the one night trip, we enjoyed breakfast in the bay by ourselves. On the second day, we enjoyed kayaking and a grilled lunch on the beach. We were the only ones there.

The landscape of these tall islands in the hazy sky is breathtaking and we enjoyed great meals as we floated through the water. All the food was delicious and included in the price. We just had to pay extra for the beer and wine. They feed us great dishes and the chef taught us how to make spring rolls. We had a staff of 6 on board for the 4 of us. Andy our tour guide took great care of us and spoke great English and while the rest of the team spoke broken English they were so great to us and so kind with their smiles and giggles as we ordered another bottle of wine. It was the perfect quiet ending to our time in Vietnam and one of the highlights of our visit.

Very beautiful place to visit. One day is not enough as there are thousands of islands spread over a large area. There we dozens of boats of all sizes which made it all more spectacular. Must see the large cave and tip top island.
