“Sunday family vibe”
Review of Night Market

We visited the market on the Sunday evening, it was extremely busy so hold onto your kids if you have them! What really caught our eye though was the shear number of local families out with children enjoying a Sunday stroll and play around the top end of Hoam Kiem Lake. It was such an intoxicating atmosphere with kids playing the national sport (da cau), it involved kicking a weighted shuttlecock with feathers! and toddlers taking remote control cars for a spin (or rather the parents were controlling them!). Fascinating experience to see how Vietnamese go about their daily lives.

Saturdays are very packed. If possible, head there on other days like Fri or Sun.

Hectic place where you can get cheap clothes, shoes etc. Remember to bargain if possible but I reckon these days the vendors have placed their “best price” and hard to bargain down further.

Word of advice: go for stalls with prices shown so you’ll at least have a benchmark and how to bargain.

F&B: apart from the deep fried skewers, the sugarcane drink with lime is nice.

We were here on Sunday night. It was very crowded but exactly how I want it. There were many things to buy and many food joints to have some midnight snack. You might want a Vietnamese to accompany you or know enough language to get a raw deal. Still, everything is dirt cheap without a bargain. And the food is incredible as well.

I went there to just feel the vibe but really got no patience to walk around with two young kids under my arm. Goods are not interesting.

The market is open 19.00 to 23.00 Friday to Sunday nights, they close off several streets in the old town directly north of the lake so easy to find. The stalls are set up down the middle of the road in a back to back lay out so it is best to walk up one side then back down the other then you can look at the market stall and also the shop there too.My tip would be to walk all the way up and down first and get an idea of whats on sale and how many similar stalls and shops are selling the goods you may be interested in before you start shopping and haggling,a lot of the stalls are just extensions of the shops they are outside off and if they don"t have the exact item you want they will go to the shop and try to find it.Many of the stall are selling the usual fake designer goods but as long as you expect this you know they can"t be genuine by the low prices they are willing to sell them at,that said if you haggle you can get some bargains in clothes, shoes, artwork, ceramics, hiking wear and many souvenirs. There are many food stalls spread throughout the market so you can always get a snack if you are hungry but on some of the streets that adjoin the main avenue they are set out with many food and beer shops and there is a great atmosphere with plenty of choice of where to eat and drink and plenty of music to listen to.I found some prices far cheaper on the market than in the shops during the day as there was so much competition the vendors were willing to be haggled down more,Great fun if you enjoy the thrill of the haggling chase as I do,I see it as a participation sport and great fun and the stall and shop owners are not aggressive at all. Many people warn you to be careful with your wallets, but that"s the same anywhere in a market like this.
