It’s pretty difficult to find this little cafe as entrance is through a very narrow lane from a street shop. Once you go through the narrow lane, it opens up to an old inside of a house, where the order and cashier counter is on the left. To get to the 3 seating areas (see photos), you need to climb a few flight of narrow staircase. Quite an adventure.

Ordered the egg coffee, coconut coffee and 2 other drinks. Egg and coconut coffee is just average. The roof top area overseas the Lake Hoàn Kiem in the distance. Go just before sun down and you can see the evening lights coming in. Nice ambience to make up for the average in their beverages. Love the deco at the ground floor. We also bumped into a cute dog and a sleeping rooster.

This is truly worth it. Go there if you have a bit of time to really enjoy the ambiance of the place. We went right up to the top and truly enjoyed the view, the drinks, the food, just everything. It’s not that hard to find either. If you find the domino pizza place in the same road, you are almost there. Can’t recommend this place high enough!

Had the address and GPS going and it still took two or three passes to find. It didn't help that there was an actual man with balloons blocking the front. Once you go through the souvenir shop you have a long alley leading into a strange backyard with roosters. Yep. You order, head upstairs (4x lol) for an amazing balcony patio that is breezy and truly an escape from Hanoi.

Oh yeah and the egg coffee is supreme. Like drinking foam caramel.

After dinner on our last day in Hanoi, we decided to suss out Cafe Pho Co. We got a little lost trying to find this quaint cafe along Hang Gai. Instead of going through the silk shop, we followed another couple through a dark alley, up the stairs to ... somebody's house !! We wandered back out, this time went through the narrow silk shop, and stepped into a large courtyard where a lady cashier stood behind an old-fashioned counter.
We placed our orders (coffee with condensed milk, and one with fresh milk VD35k each), and climbed up the spiral staircase all the way to the rooftop. Unfortunately, the section which overlooks the lake was cordoned off. So we went back down to the 2nd level and took a seat in the large hall to await our drinks. The hall was decorated to look like someone's living room. It was cool in the hall with the breeze coming in through the open windows. There's free wifi too.
Before long, we heard a whirring noise and thought it was the air conditioning unit. But no - it was the dumb waiter from whence our server got our drinks. The coffee filled just half the cup. We took a sip and understood why. It was potently strong - like espresso.
There was another seating area mid-way between the 2nd and 1st floors. It was across a little metal bridge, and decorated like a Mandarin parlour. On the 1st floor where we paid our bill, there was a small area with birdcages and lots of plants and fauna.
If you are a social media butterfly, this place would be worth it for all the IG-worthy photographs. Having said that, the coffee here is very good too - so well worth tracking this cafe down !

On my last trip to Vietnam, our tour guide took us to this café on the 4th floor of a building in Hanoi to have egg coffee and take in the views of Hoan Kiem Lake. It was an enlightening experience. You see my family is from Central and Southern Vietnam. I grew up with cà phê sữa đá but not cà phê trứng. It was a first for me and my cousin had mentioned that I should try it when I visited Hanoi. As the story goes, back when milk was scarce, they had to find a different way to make coffee, so they incorporated egg yolk to obtain the richness that was missing. Fast forward a few decades and egg coffee is on just about every menu in Northern Vietnam. The café I went to doesn’t claim to have invented it but they have some amazing views from the top floor. You walk in, place your order, marvel at the gardens, walk up some precarious flights of stairs, and end up at the rooftop café. The servers will bring out the orders, sip your coffee, enjoy the view, and take a break from the world.
