We were staying in the Old Quarter for our three night stay in Hanoi at the recommendation of my son and what a great place to base ourselves! There is so much to see during the day from museums, mausoleums, rooftop bars or just seeing the Hanoi people going about their daily lives. By night the Old Quarter comes alive with the street market, shops, restaurants and bars, there is so much to see and do, you will never get bored. It was a great start to our three week trip through Vietnam!

Old quarter is the heart of Hanoi and has to be the place to stay near when visiting. Lively, noisy, hectic at most times in the day, the atmosphere is so vibrant and energetic, you feel like your in the heart of a major city, which it is. Consisting of shops, restaurants, bars, tourist offices and massage parlours, you will find it all here. I did a food tour and most places visited were in the old quarter or nearby, it has the best local food. At night the streets are just full of life and people till late in the night and early morning which is great to see. It has so much authenticity with locals outside the streets. If you take tourism out of Hanoi, it would do little to the vibrancy of the old quarter, the locals make this place special.

The old quarter streets of Hanoi are always busy with lots of traffic. the shops open 14-18 hours daily depending on what they sell. Name of streets will tell you what they sold or their business in the past. Please make a bargain when do shopping here

Just walk around and enjoy the local life here. Lot's of local shops and restaurants. See the authentic life of Hanoi, and just go with the flow. It can be quite busy around here..

before traveling to Vietnam i read many stories on the internet about how crazy Hanoi especially the ''Old Quarter'' could be, well to some extent yes it was :-) ...

people are generally friendly, they might look at you differently, no need to feel uncomfortable because of that, i've learnt, that's only because you're a tourist ...

as you learn to walk and explore the 'Old Quarter', you will fall in love with the place ....

small cafes, artistic interiors, yes the bikers are absolutely crazy they wont even let you walk comfortably on the foot path :-) that's why i wrote '' as you learn to walk'' :-) ...

trust me once you're good with that you will enjoy it like anything ....
