I have just stayed at Shah Palace and I recommended it. It is not perfect, but there are 3 big positives about the place
First the position is brilliant, by the Double Gates of Old Town, just 200meters from more modern shops and restaurants if you wish to get ‘beyond the walls’.
Secondly the staff are really trying hard and did lots of extras. They found me a adaptor so I could charge my computer, organized airport transfers without a hitch and arranged a driver to visit Gobustan with more flexibility (and cheaper price) than tourist information could do.
Thirdly it is great value. I paid $350 for three nights with breakfast.
So what could be better? Well rooms are big, kept clean but are suffering from age and poor design. They face into the courtyard and people are walking by all the time, so you more or less have to keep your curtains drawn whenever you are in the room.
The breakfast was lacking a bit of love and care. The chef did a good omelet but coffee was Nescafé, the salad, although plentiful, looked a bit tired, cereal was definitely the sugar cheap end of the market.
However baring in mind the three main points – position, staff, value and I would most certainly recommend a stay here.More
