Description: Kualao is not just a paragon of Vientiane hospitality, but is also a charming example of French colonial architecture and a treasury of the finest, authentic Lao cuisine. --------- Kualao Restaurant is Vientiane's most popular, internationally recognized, up-scale and authentic Lao food restaurant, where both local and visiting diners bask in an ambience that flawlessly reincarnates the romantic and sophisticated atmosphere of early colonial French Indochina. Kualao is discretely, and conveniently, nestled on the corner of the city's landmark That Dam Intersection, which is known for the famous 'Black Shrine' stupa that sits at the center of the nearby roundabout. The restaurant is housed in a charmingly elegant, vintage villa that, until only decades ago, formed the residential estate of French colonial officials. The restaurant's exterior epitomizes architecture 'a la francaise', invoking thoughts of the society parties, business deals and political intrigue that must have taken place there in the colonial era. The interior, however, whispers the soft Lao overtones of a traditional Southeast Asian interior. The distinctively patterned textiles, the rattan wall rendering, the discrete lighting, the traditionally glazed ceramic plates and the elegant golden cutlery is distinctly Lao and has been fused with modern, international essentials, such as a fully stocked wine cellar and an English language version of the menu. The harmonious blend of East and West is typified by the beautiful female hostesses in their traditional, multi-colored Lao Sinh skirts and the male 'garcons' in their formal, western-style black trousers, white shirts and bow ties. In its days as a prominent colonial estate, the Kualao building played host to Vientiane's elite society. Now, as Vientiane's most prestigious Lao restaurant, it is still the perfect place to meet, relax, enjoy sumptuous food and impeccable service and be captivated by enchanting Lao entertainment. You cannot truly say you have experienced the best that Laos has to offer unless you have dined at Kualao.

The show (dancing) started at 7:30pm and was very short. The live music was ongoing throughout the night. Nobody in the restaurant seemed to pay attention to either the live music or dancing for some reason.

Food was good. Good portion size for three people. There was something for everyone. Restaurant is in close proximity to city center.

They prioritize reservations over walk-ins. We had our hotel make a reservation for us, but the restaurant didn’t seem to have us down when we arrived. They still seated us and were very kind. The restaurant was not filled when we finished our dinner and left.

The food was excellent and the service very good. It came as a surprise to see coach loads of tourists on the evening that we went. However, later realised that because of the music/dance show this is on the tour circuit. It did not spoil our evening especially as the Chinese tourists clapped along to the music (the musicians clearly used to having a Chinese audience!).

I guess if you want to try all Lao's food in one seating, this is the place to go. I ordered the huge set which is 220k kip. there 12 set of dishes in one plate, and the waitress explained each one of the dishes that are served.

There's 2 particular food that was not in my liking. So that means 10 of it is still good. Different people different opinion.

The live music start and 7pm and the dance started at 7:30pm. I was there since 6pm and just enjoying each bite I took of the food.

The drinks are the one pricey. I dont understand the price actually. It's actually someone expensive for the food, but because you have a live shows and music while.you eating, is still a good thing. Wish there's more dances.

A popular place with groups, mainly Asian! I was given a pleasant table by a window in the smaller room so I could watch the musicians & dancers. Not sure if they are on every evening, maybe worth checking! Enjoyed a tasty meal. Reasonably priced. Well looked after. Thank-you.

Truly upmarket and serve the best meal in town.
Do Not Miss It.
There is an old classical Jaguar stationed at the front of the colonial restaurant to add the tou h of class...
